We've been bombarded over the last few months by press giving news on the takeover of Reading FC, and especially of the lack of movement. And, of course, on the beautiful Katsia. But despite some of our fears, the guys inside the club - especially the players - didn't seem to much doubt that it was always going forward correctly.
But all this public news that us, the fans, have received has been almost entirely focussed on the legal and financial aspects of the purchase, and not on the moral and sensitivity side, and the result that this might produce in the players. Therefore I was much interested to read the following article which places its purpose more in the man-management side of things, and of how the takeover has affected the players themselves, and of how they've been introduced to Mr Zingarevich himself. After browsing through it, I'd be interested to see if any of your opinions and views change in any way ...

McAnuff: Financial investment only helped to spur players on

Includes quote:
- McAnuff also revealed how the playing staff took to Zingarevich after the Russian millionaire initially seemed a little shy. However, after a few meetings, the barriers began to fall, the ice was broken, and Zingarevich soon started to feel like he belonged at Madejski Stadium. And, having bankrolled the signings of Jason Roberts,Tomasz Cywka and Hayden Mullins, as well as allowing the club to offer new deals for star player Jimmy Kebe and boss Brian McDermott, Zingarevich had every right to celebrate in Reading’s promotion.
“Perhaps he was a little reluctant that it (the takeover) hadn’t progressed as he had hoped, but Anton began to come into the changing room towards the end of the season and he joined in with our celebrations," said McAnuff.
“He was a little bit reluctant at times to be involved, but we soon changed that. We got him on the bus for the tour of Reading and we got on really well during the times we have spent with him. It’s difficult for anyone new coming into the club, whether you’re an owner, a new manger or a new player. We had all been here for a while, but he did it in the right way in terms of gradually getting involved rather than jumping in head on. We’ve tried to welcome him and I think he has really started to feel a bit more of a part of everything."

Not sure why it didn't click with Brendan, but remember we were in play-offs end of previous season. Coppell goes as we fall in both legs to Burnley in the SF play-off. That was the swan song of the great 2005-06 promotion team. Obviously a rebuilding process had to begin. But despite being little ol' Reading, I now believe Brendan didn't get the time he needed to install 'his' way. But I'm as guilty as any others; as we struggled around the relegation places late in 2010 I didn't bat an eye-lid when he left by 'mutual' consent. But neither could we opinate on McDermott - to a large extent an unknown. But the way he quickly pulled us around, coupled with the cup exploits quickly endeared himself to the fans. The rest is history, as they say ...

Watched a couple of interviews with Anton during the promotion parties and he seemed like a really articulate and humble guy, the right kind of noises are coming out of the club without significant changes and just expanding on what we are already doing. Keeping SJM as chairman was a great touch as well, keeping all the old guard and just adding on it, rather than a completely new regime, ala Blackburn. So without getting too far ahead I think it's been an encouraging start, without even mentioning that without the TSI investment, it’s unlikely we'd of gone up such was the impact of the new signings/contracts.
BR imo tried to change too much too quickly, we went from a regular quick tempo 4-4-2 straight to the style BR tries to play we were left all at sea when he came in, we had a decent pass % but little else, there was flashes that maybe it was starting to click together, but we were looking that we could be heading to League 1 and the parting was pretty inevitable, I think all in all it worked for both parties looking where we are now.
While Swansea were set up for him, there is some adapting to do at Liverpool so he will time to set things up there his way, personally I wouldn't think Liverpool will do much better next season than what they did this, will probably the second season before he can kick on and whether he will get that time I don't know.
One thing I will say is whoever gets Gylfi for the £6.8m it will be the signing of the season, I fully believe he will go on and emulate the kind of career Lampard has had and certainly wouldn't surprise me to see him as Liverpool's top scorer next season. When you look at the ridiculous sums being spent for players, £6.8m is daylight robbery and can just say it was a pleasure to watch him start his career in a Reading shirt.
