Obviously VDV didn't play much today, but when he came on, he played in that holding role in the 4231 as he usually does for Holland. It got me thinking that if he does it so regularly for them, why couldn't he do it for us?
Now hear me out!
As we know, when he plays behind the striker, he loves to drop far back and start off moves. Sometimes we seem him behind Parker! He is actually good in the tackle, and is superb at spraying passes and picking out a killer one. For this reason, I could see him actually replacing Modric as the second midfield player in the 4231/4411. This would allow for Harry to play a 442 if he wanted, but it would more importantly mean we could buy a second striker type player which I believe there are more options and more quality.
What I'm saying is that it would be ridiculously hard to replace Modric if he left, whereas it's easier to replace VDV. So, we don't need to worry about signing anyone, just use VDV.
Anyone else think this could work? Or would we need to buy someone new to play alongside Sandro or Parker?

vdv in cm in the premier league he would be an absolute passenger.
i am also not convinced he has the discipline to play the position properly.
furthermore he is not fit enough
furthermore he is the best finisher at the club, so why would take him out of the attacking third and put him in the neutral third.
on all levels that is a very very bad idea and poor suggestion.... only my opinion though

Id prefer him to stay close to the box. if were not playing 2 up the least we can do is play 1.5

I wrote an article about VDV replacing Modric (if he leaves) in centre midfield a while ago.
Yes there are issues about Rafa's fitness and his ability to finish games, but im convinced he could do it.
Hopefully if we could sign him permanently, Adebayor could play as a second striker in support of someone like Remy / Damaio.
For the two centre midfield positions we would have Parker and Sandro competing for the defensive midfield role and VDV and Huddlestone competing for the creative role and with the ever improving Livermore providing back up.

I actually think your point in this article is very right. Funnily enough, anyone who has followed VDV's career would know he has played centre mid quite often in the past. He even played there for Real Madrid and had a very good season.
As far as having a "football brain" and also technique, I don't think we can find a better player than VDV in centre mid. if Modric leaves. Questions about his fitness are understandable though.

so you would put our most clinical finisher in a deeper role.
