It has gone down, although I'd point to a couple of things about this list:
First, some aren't as far behind their older counterparts as others. Hart for instance isn't far behind Seaman and should develop to Seaman's level or beyond in the next few years. Second, are we remembering these players at their peak? And players like Gascoigne were unfortunately beyond their peak at that point while some of our current players haven't necessarily reached their peak yet.

Cahill, Wilshere, Lampard, Rooney, Bent would all be starters had they been fit.
Our XI that faced France was effectively a second team, yet thye managed a draw against France so pleasantly suprised there

Venables v Hodgson as well.
I notice today that Hodgson is saying he may have to rest Parker and Gerrard as they are over 30 and hes not sure they can play 2 games in 4 days! There goes another so called Rio concern out the window.

That's no sign of how well England played, more to do with how bad a very good French team played. We looked terrible, no ball control, sitting far too deep with Young and Danny recieving scraps due to the midfield being to scared to commit to an attack. The team of 96 had captains/leaders all over the pitch. This team's disjointed relying too much on the back four preventing goals as apposed to creating them.
