How good was he for us?
He was very useful in the 08/09 title challenging season, but he has been labelled as another flop by Benitez since he left.
Downing is also a very similar player.
Albert Riera

Riera and Downing are nothing alike, all Albert ever did was cut in side and could never be destined as a winger. Downing gets his crosses in and plenty of them!
So there not similar!

Riera was bad then good for a bit, then average for a while.

IMO we haven't had anyone decent in that position since Patrick Berger.
We don't necessarily need another John Barnes, (though it'd be nice), but we need some consistency.
I believe Downing will provide that.

Why have you a personal vendetta against this lad? Every article you write, is about him. Just write an article saying you don't like him. We'll get the message then move on.

I thought he did a good job- offered that balance on the left flank, had some tricks up his sleeve, could beat a defender, decent shot, decent cross and chipped in with some goals. What more do you want from a winger?
Shame he wasn't consistent enough.
