Rangers chief executive Martin Bain has been caught-up in allegations of financial impropriety regarding the signing of Jean-Alain Boumsong.

An article in French daily sports newspaper L’Equipe has detailed a transaction involving Bain in an article about police investigations into the legality of several player transfers.

The payment in question relates to Bain’s purchase of a house in France from Laurent Charvet, the former Chelsea and Newcastle player, who was represented by Ranko Stojic, an agent.

The French police allegedly discovered a hand-written document proving that a significant part of the fees (€75,000 + £100,000) paid by Rangers to Stojic on a Monaco bank were secretly transfered back to Bain.

The French newspaper reports that the authorites have passed the document on to the “Juge d’instruction" (equivalent of the Procurator Fiscal) who shall decide whether further investigations are required.

Stojic acted on Rangers’ behalf when they secured the services of French defender Boumsong under freedom of contract from Auxerre in 2004. The player was then sold to Newcastle for £8 million just six months later.

Bain, who has been with Rangers since 1996 when he joined the club’s commercial staff, was director of football business at the time of the Boumsong signing.

He was appointed chief executive by Murray in February 2005.
