Good points Jezza... and Smith and Thorpe never had to go out and open the innings against the new ball either.

You missed the crucial part of my post..."for a couple of years".
Jones the biggest miss? He was quality for 3 and half Test Matches. He was the weakling of the attack prior to Old Trafford 2005 tbh. You remember that day at Edgbaston where Australia nearly won? Jones didn't even bowl. Giles was preferred over Jones ffs!
Did you actually watch cricket 10 years ago or are you relying on the myths and perceptions that have been created since?

hazsa why do you say Giles was preferred over Jones, Giles was not a fast bowler so not in contention with him. More likely Flintoff, Hoggard and Harmison were preferred ahead of him.

Whichever way you want to look at it, S Jones was well and truly a 4th seamer.
Despite never playing again for England he seems to have gotten better and better

Jones was better with the old ball and the bowler England turned to for reverse swing. Also more skiddy compared to Harmison and Flintoff. He also got wickets in the 2005 series at the beginning of his spells.

Hazsa,
My first 'in person' test was England vs West Indies at Edgbaston in 1991. I've only missed attending at least one day of test match cricket in two of teh 21 years since then.
For the rest happily now there's high quality coverage on Sky.

@ hasza
P.S.
before I dig out the stats to prove my point, and to prevent you shifting your ground after I've proved you wrong, please define which 'couple of years' Flintoff carried the England team.
