Absolutely stunned when i heard this news
Only 48 years old
Always gave 100% on and off the pitch and a real nice guy.
Will always be remembered for that performance in 1986 at Wembley and his comments after the game have gone down in folklore

Horrible shock! Very sad! Great bloke on and off the field! This sort of thing seems to be happening more and more these days with often the best people being taken. So much for the human predicament ---- "If God was one of us .........." Vaya con dios, Alan!"

Spine-chilling. Can't believe it. One of the good guys, heartbroken for his family circle.
Thanks for the title in 08/09 Alan, rest in peace.

I can just about remember the qualifying campaign for the 86 world cup, when we undeservedly lost 1-0 at home to England (remember Jimmy Quinn's header against the bar!!) before holding out for a 0-0 at Wembley and of course McDonald's infamous interview afterwards (which got me and my schoolmates going 'good on ye, big Mac!'.
In many ways it's characters like McDonald that really make football what it is, fans can readily appreciate a no-nonsense player who is giving it his all.
Always sad when a person dies too early - RIP, and thanks for some great memories.

Always played for the shirt and one of the good guys.
As one of the fans at Wembley in 1985,I will never forget his words after the game, and the effort he and the team put in to qualify.
RIP Alan.
