How optimistic

...Are you regarding next season?

Choose from the 5 below:

5 stars: We can mount successful challenges for any (not all) of the major trophies next season.

4 stars: The squad isn't quite good enough or tough enough to go the distance in the league, but realistically we can end the trophy drought.

3 stars: The early signs of investment have been encouraging, but we need more to really challenge.

2 stars: Difficult to see us getting anything other than top 4.

1 star: No RvP, unproven (in the PL) replacements. We cut in fine with regard to CL football this season, next season our luck will run dry,

Please state what you chose in the comments, and feel free to talk about the business we've done so far as well

I chose 3.

On paper, if we get M'Vila, Giroud and a decent replacement for Van Persie, we should win a trophy, but I think it'll take a couple of years for the team to really gel and get its belief back. Still, this time last year it would have been a 2 or 1 rather than a 3/4.

Unfortunately we do not have the financial clout for number 5 because that's what has become.

The rest is to speculative to even comment at this point.

3 at the moment. If we keep RVP and all our first teamers and sign a quality midfielder (M'Vila or Eriksen) then 4/5.

A lot depends on RVP staying. The hit to the club if he goes will be more than just the loss of his quality but it will confirm us as a second tier club (which we have been slipping to for a few years).

i voted 2.

although i am impressed (albeit flabbergasted) that wenger is signing players, i still think he represents the main problem.

he's been at the club too long, and his methods have become stale. his entire squad (bar one player) has changed completely on more than one occasion, yet no matter who he brings in, we still have the same problems. he can do whatever he wants to try and inject new life into his methods, such as changing his assistant or bringing in new coaches; but in the end, i think he just no longer has that x-factor to go the distance. you can only tell the players the same thing for so long before they stop responding.

do i feel sympathy for him? yes, of course - he has done more than his share for arsenal. but it's obvious that a fresh approach is needed for the club to move forward.

KPPR - I think as far as keeping the club stable goes, he's absolutely the best man in the world for us.

However, you might have a point in that I think there are other managers who could win us trophies. We make very naive mistakes under Arsene, our team is infuriating.

I still think Wenger must stay - it'll be a case of not knowing what we had until it's gone. After all, Liverpool won silverware last season.

Summed up my thoughts as well, KPPR. Well said.

Very good post

If Wenger can change and allow Bould to work on the defensive coaching, AND he can motivate the team, he is still worth keeping on as manager.

He HAS to change though. I am not sure he would want to go through another season of constant mistakes and lack of concentration in the team. It is infuriating and more and more fans will begin to take it out on Wenger.
