I see this little topic has popped up again over on the NIreland board. That said i would question the motives of this particular Article !!!!
Is it an attempt to for once actually have a Football related discussion on the NIreland board or is just an excuse to trade insults with other posters !!
Anyway back to my own article.
As the title suggests i am not in favour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland Football sides joining forces as one Ireland team like we had pre 1921!!
My reasons have absolutely nothing to do with politics.
I will list them in numbered points . My reasons are all Football related and are based primarily on the current standards of both sides.
(1). I don't believe it would make the ROI neccesarily a better side.
If you look at the current NIreland squad i honestly believe only 2 of their first team could come in and make a difference to our team.
Evans and Davis. Definitely Evans. Maybe Davis. But then again he has only really proved himself in the SPL so the jury is out there.
Hughes due to his experience would probably be good enough for the subs bench and Shane Ferguson if Newcastle Utd fans are to believed could go on to become a fine footballer.
I honestly can't see any other NIreland footballer who could improve our side.
(2). The ROI can already select players from each of the 32 counties on this Island.
Controversial yes. But as per the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and then given the full backing of the CAS any player born anywhere on this Island can play for us if he so wishes. This kind of puts the whole All Ireland thing to bed as far as i am concerned.
(3). Where would the Home matches be played?
Dublin or Belfast? This would only cause hassle and infighting. Which is precisely the reason the Leinster FA decided to break away from the IFA back in 1921 and form the then "Free State Side". And to be honest we haven't looked back since.
Peoples thoughts .
I don't want an All Ireland Football side

Quote about Davis from Robbie - But then again he has only really proved himself in the SPL so the jury is out there.

He proved himself at Aston Villa and Fulham mate. My bro is a huge Villa fan and was gutted when he left. Rangers was a bad career move for him but he was a boyhood fan.

Come on man! You cant let these WUMs from both sides get to you. An All Ireland team would be a great thing for all sorts of reasons, sporting and otherwise! Not just for now, but also for the future. It seems to work well in other sports. For example, in boxing the All Ireland team was once right up there at the top of the World at No. 3! Even the Cubans were running scared of us and as for the East Europeans and Yanks, well we were just mostly walking thru them. The atmosphere in an internationally dominant All Ireland sporting team with members from all over the country and both major traditions is completely intoxicating and very theraphuetic! It would help both sides of the country(ROI and NI)in many ways.

In a perfect world Reiver.
But imagine all the infighting among the FAI and IFA !!
The so called "Buffoons in Blazers"!!! Both associations seem as incompetent as the other. Just loads of committee men along for the free drink and the hospitality!!
Imagine the rows over who spent what at the bar. Especially when Delaneys on the lash

Im afraid all the "Buffoons" will just have to go! They've had their day!
Perhaps the new All Ireland FA could be run with more input from the supporters along the lines of the present set up at Shamrock Rovers and Crusaders.
