Team of the Day 28/06/12

Morning

So as we have had some transfer activity but not much else I have been wondering how we will line up now and who we may get.

Based on the players we have signed (or agreed to sign) I would start with the following:

PositionName
GoalkeeperAlex Smithies
Right BackJack Hunt
Left BackPaul Dixon
Centre BackPeter Clarke
Centre BackMurray Wallace
Centre MidfieldOscar Gobern
Centre MidfieldScott Arfield
Left WingerDanny Ward
Right WingerSean Scannell
StrikerJordan Rhodes
StrikerKallum Higginbotham

Now I hope we get Morrison and he replaces Clarke (if Wallace is up to the job) and we need atleast one Centre Midfield player. Personally I would like to see Quinn from Sheffield United come in for that and then maybe an older head to get Gobern up to task (who I think has potential unlike Robinson).

Attack wise it depends if Rhodes goes but if not he is the first name on the team sheet and Higgs needs to play, that was proven at the end of last season and will be even more important as better football is played up in this division.

So who would you want to bring in (realistically) and where would they fit?

He looked good as a winger to me did higgy

Because, like Grayson and Clark before him its tricky to work out where to put Higgs. He is best suited behind the front 2 in my book but that entails playing a totally different formation unless we keep getting overrun in midfield.

I hear Peltier being linked for a return and wonder where he would fit in? Hunt replaced him at RB before we sold him and he did do a job in midfield so maybe that is the thought?

higgsy..??

in their half, wherever he wants to go...coming short, collecting and moving forward with the ball.. he has a decent touch and good control and that type of player in that role is the hardest to mark..

he is only a lad so should be able to drop and take a covering position around the half way line etc..

he just appears to be a player that you cant plan for, unless you specifically have a man marker for him.. that always leaves space for someone else..

about time we had a "drifter"...

we have seen other teams always have what appears to be a spare man collecting the ball in space on the halfway line, be that wide or in the middle, they always had an "out ball" that wasnt a 50/50 long high punt or just a boot to "nowhere"..

about time we had the same..

I agree 38, I thought with Higgs in our team we had different attacking options that didnt involve a punt up the field. Players at all levels panic when the attacker runs with the ball towards them in space.

What I wouldnt want is him on the wing and then "doing a Roberts" and drifting inside all the time meaning we have no width. I personally think wingers staying wide gives you more outlets to pass to a man in space. For years we have bunched up in the same little bit of grass without someone thinking "if I were 10 yards away from them I may get the space for a run"!

When did Higgy play behind a front 2?

He's played for Town behind a front man, he's played for Town on the wing. He played for Barnsley on the wing.

When have you seen him play behind a front 2?

Not having a go or anything just don't get how you have come to that conclusion

I havent seen him play behind a front 2 but its that he is at his best when running at defenders and ever since Paul Scholes I tend to think the perfect role is just "in the hole" behind the forwards. We have done it with only 1 upfront but I thought maybe we could try it with 2 upfront and him behind so the attackers arent too easily crowded out.
