I was and still am a big fan of the early Resident Evil games. When they first came out they were truly terrifying and made for some cracking scenes.
Now as the years have gone by and game producers look for bigger kicks (more blood, more kills, faster experience) zombie games have lost that entire fear aspect (IE dead island was a joke). I feel a lot of this is down to a lot of run n gun scenes(everyone wanted to be able to aim and move at the same time in RE games, but with slow moving zombies it makes it a piece of cake) as well as having things like machine guns so you never feel outnumbered or under pressure no matter what's coming at you. Also in recent RE games you NEVER struggle for ammo so its just a case of plowing through what's infront of you.
The atmosphere died, the fear was gone and all that was left was a shoot em up with no soul or meaning. Honestly I thought zombie games were dead
Then along came naughty dog; and now we have The Last of Us. Good god this game looks good. Some were critisising Uncharted on here the other day for their repetitive nature in UC games but the one thing they do well is create a bond with a character and this is massive for this genre. You can feel their concerns and desperation just to live another day.
Now we have a game where most combat is with your hands as ammo is no longer in circulation. The infected are fast and dangerous. Other humans hunt you for the sake of a couple of bullets and whatevers in your pockets (smart ai too setting traps etc) and you do everything you can just to protect a child as the world crumbles around you into an anarchy from which the world will never recover.
I can see this game being HUGE, the reaction it got at E3 said it all.
Naughty dog keep up the good work
Zombie (style games) lost direction?

Resident Evil games on the PS1 were fantastic, with the exception of a small few.
The only good one on the PS2 was RE4. How's Resident evil 5?

RE5 is enjoyable as a coop experience.

Best Zombie game to come out for the last few years was the Red Dead Redemption Dead Nightmare DLC. Not scary, but a lot of fun.
And it's difficult to be scared by games nowadays. Same with movies. Especially with Zombie games. The only thing you have going for you is that they can jump out at you. After a while, the allure of it disappears, and you realise what's going to happen.

I thought this while playing a bit of RE5. It seemed more like a shoot em up than a survival horror. I think the old setting of a mansion was perfect because there was so much to explore, and horrors around the corner, whereas the last couple are in villages, and you aren't actually fighting zombies. I'm too young to have played the originals, but they look so much more interesting to play than the new ones. I remember watching my brother play the remake of RE1 I think. When he first stumbled upon Lisa Trevor, we were like . I said I heard something and he was like and then chains rattled

RE4 is my favourite (non-football) game of all time. 1 & 2 my favourite (non-football) PS1 games. 5 was such a let down, as mentioned by Kent it felt more like a shooter than a survival horror.
I have hopes for 6 but I am not anticipating it as much as I have been for the others in the past.
Last of Us looks utterly superb although again, not strictly Zombies. It is an insect eating fungus parasite that ended up infecting humans. I see bits of The Road and of course Uncharted as well as survival horror

Any of you have Arma 2 have a look at a mod called Day Z. Being made by one of the lead designers at Bohemian games. Now this is a zombie game!
