This time a year ago we had finally broke the Top 4 after a fantastic season that included memorable wins over Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Fast forward to August 17th 815pm and we were 3-0 down on a dodgy astro turf pitch to Young Boys of Bern, and our European tour was looking like it would last about as long as a Jonathon Woodgate comeback.
In true Spurs fashion we done things the hard way and clawed back 2 goals in a game that we should have lost by 3 or more.
Being at The Lane for the return leg and hearing that Champions League theme tune was something special and after Crouchy knocked in 3 we were in the group stages of the most prestigious club tournament in world football. In the league we weren't all that convincing, after a Joe Hart masterclass we drew 0-0 with Man City and saw Wigan and their 90 fans leave White Hart Lane with 3 points. However they would be the only team to do so this season.
Rafa van der Vaart's £8m signing on the last day was a great bit of wheeling and dealing from Harry 'Not a wheeler dealer' Redknapp and the Dutch maestro was a pivotal figure in our Champions League run.
45 minutes into at the San Siro and we were on course for a 7/8 goal battering, Gareth Bale had other ideas and a mesmerising hat trick made the scoreline a respectable 4-3. The return leg provided an electric night at The Lane and Bale raped Maicon for 90 minutes and the 3-1 victory was fully deserved. In November we headed over the The Emirates stadium and at half time a few of us debated walking back down the Seven Sisters road and drowning our sorrows, being a Tottenham fan though you can never leave even 10 seconds early (as Pavlyuchenko proved last Sunday against Birmingham) and by the time Kaboul had flicked the 3rd goal home past the Gooners one corner of The Emigrates was going insane. What a day! Add to that the double over Liverpool King Kenny F.C shown what we can do on our day.
AC Milan in the last 16 was scant reward for topping the group of death.
We were informed that the Italian giants with young talent like Pato, Robinho and the experience of Seedorf, Flamini et al would destroy.
Naturally, as soon as we'd beat them 1-0 and shut them out for 180 minutes they all become 'over the hill' and 'past it'.
Then Crouchy decided after getting us into The Champions League with his goals against Man City and Young Boys that he'd had enough and his reckless red card in the 9th minute at The Bernabeu made a near impossible task, impossible and just to make sure of it Gomes decided to chuck a few in over the 2 legs. After that our season fizzled out but the last 2 games saw victories over Liverpool and Birmingham to ensure a 5th placed finished and some Glory, Glory Channel 5 nights to brighten up our Thursdays next year.
All in all, a good season. Disappointing not to be in The Champions League again next year but only finished 1 place outside of it with no top class striker, with 1 or 2 additions we could have a real go at being a Top 4 side once again and showing Europe how to entertain in The Champions League. Until then, look forward to Man City wowing Europe with their 'Poznan' celebration after a 1-0 win. Zzzzz
Until next season. YID ARMY!
