Do we need another DM?

A lot of us have been discussing on what type of players we need and what positions we need to fill.

Everyone agrees that we need cover for lucas in the DM role.

After looking at our midfielders and looking at the type of midfielders we have been linked with, I reckon we might have Gerrard filling in for Lucas when Lucas does not play.

Gerrard played that role for England in euro's quite well and the midfielders that we are linked with are centre or attacking mids.

Do you guys see this happening?

We definitely need another DM.

People scream about wanting Spearing sold, but I don't particularly mind him - as long as he's not the very next option after Lucas. There has to be another rung on the ladder, a better replacement if Lucas is injured or suspended.

Spearing reminds me of N'Gog; he's not the atrocity against mankind that he's made out to be, it's just that, for reasons beyond his control, he's further up the pecking order than he should be.

People get this idea that every backup player you have needs to be as good as your first teamer. Obviously there's going to be a drop in quality (otherwise the player wouldn't accept being backup). I think we need to get in another DM, so that Spearing can be used when we want to use him, rather than us being forced into it.

Look at United over the past couple of years, they had John O'Shea who, at the top level, is poor, but as a 3rd choice was very useful. Even Wes Brown was a bit of an enigma, not quite good enough to be first choice for a team like United, but for my money he was one of the best backup defenders you could wish for.

I reckon if we do purchase a DM, we really should be looking at lassana Diarra or fernando gago who are bothg available.

I think Spearing is held in low regard because he made some glaring errors in big matches. I'll say this though, he never hid and he made himself available to take the ball.

Brendans style seems to depend on winning the ball back quickly, how many players do we have that can do that? In my opinion Spearing is one such player. If BR can coach him to play in simple he could well be very useful. I would like to see Connor Coady stepping up at some stage too.

If we have to go out for such a player Lassana Diarra could be good along with Jordie Classie.

When Kenny first took over, Spearing actually looked pretty good alongside Lucas. It was only really when Lucas got injured that he started looking fairly out of his depth. Then again, Lucas is so good IMO that he easily masks any deficiencies in his CM partner; Charlie Adam was playing reasonably well alongside him, but looked like a comedy skit when Lucas got injured.

Coady has the potential to be better than Spearing ever will be. The big question about centre-mids stepping up is whether they'll be assertive enough, and I think Rodgers is the perfect manager to tell Coady exactly what he needs to improve on (ditto Henderson and Shelvey). Coady's very tidy, and a couple of seasons of Buck teaching him about movement, positioning and passing could see him becoming a squad player.

I agree with the above posts about Diarra, and I also agree with Aggers about that Classie fella. I dismiss most YouTube compilations out of hand, but someone put up a video that was composed of Classie highlights from just a few matches (rather than 30 individual clips from 30 different matches) and he looked a cut above in those matches. His style of play screamed "Mascherano".

Totally agree with this, a good coach can make a massive difference to players like Coady. Working with what we have is going to be so important.

I do think hendo is pretty limited when it comes to attacking. Yes I know he has time to improve but I don't see it. However just like Lucas he could be converted into a DM and maybe a preseason where he is told to focus in that area could do him alot of good.

As for Gerrard as DM, no chance. He did that for England cos he was injured and had a poor Parker next to him. As he showed he still has too much to offer in final 3rd.

Yes

Spearing never hides, are you having a laugh, he hides every match by standing as close to his nearest team mate attempting to dictate play by waving his arms around.

He is never available to receive the ball in a position that is benificial to the team, there is no point having him as a 3rd choice DM, we have youngsters that can do that and other more talented CM that can fill in if we have a DM crisis.

I have nothing personal against the bot, its just a fact he is not good enough to play for Liverpool, he is not good enough to be the back up DM and his purpose as a 3rd choice DM is pointless, its not like he is 19.

If BR can work on his postional sense and movement he may come good, because he can tackle and pass, but at the moment he is let down by the fact he just looks lost and makes up for that with effort. This seriously affects the others around him, my view is that Henderson would do a better job at DM because whatever anyone says about the kid he can read a game very well and is usually in the right place and the right time.
