The question
The Chinese swimmer...I keep hearing she broke the world record by 5 seconds...I think this is incorrect & she beat it by 1 second - which was it ?
Poor sportsmanship
The Korean fencer having a strop because she lost in the semi final
The South East Asian Badminton players deliberately losing games to get an easy run in the knock outs
disgraceful - surprised we havn't had a drugs scandal yet...
discuss
clear up a question & poor sports

unsure
there's only a certain amount can enter some events surely...
Or you could put about five teams in

Yeah seems to be team sports every country enters one, whereas individual sports you can enter as many as you like.
Entering only 1 sprinter would be better though... means the bigger nations can't swamp the finals!

Not sure why people have an issue with the number of contestants from a designated nation/country.
I have always believed the top level of any competition should feature the best in the world at whatever discipline they are competing in.
We had a ridiculous situation at one Olympics where the best eight hammer throwers (I think) in the world all came from the same nation, and only the top three from that nation could compete. It creates a false picture of the evolution of that sporting discipline.
I would much rather watch the best four badminton teams in the world compete in the semi finals regardless of whether or not they came from the same country.
The Olympic sprint finals would be a better spectacle if the 8 fastest in the world lined-up. I don't care if they are all Jamaicans/US citizens or they are from Polynesia.
Anything, and everything, to do with the vague, arbitrary, concept of 'nationhood' is absurd to say the least.

IAmMe - I appreciate the point you make, I'm sure many would agree.
In team sports though there is a division by country, and a country only gets one team... the football world cup each country only has one team.
That means the best players don't always get to play.
Division by nationality is perhaps absurd... but then again isn't division by gender equally as silly? Why not just have one competition rather than break it up into men and women categories? Surely we just want the best...?
