We have a long way to go. Stand out disappointing performance for me was from Captain Fantastic himself! Gave the ball away too much. It doesn't look like he is used to relying on his team mates to get the job done. Looked too often for the ball over the top. Counter acted Rodgers' philosophy. I wasn't convinced by the display from the team overall. The attack gets very isolated and we end up rushing it in the final third and so losing it. Just my observation.
On a positive note, Rodgers isn't afraid to throw young Sterling into the mix, was promising. Henderson seemed to prefer the style he was asked to play. By the end of the season we will have nailed what Rodgers is asking.
The gaps between players in the centre of the pitch were too wide. Players need to come to the ball! Move forward as a team. There is not enough triangles being created by the players, making the flowing moves stutter and stop. Again, just my observation. You can't pass it well on the ground and with precision and pace and having good movement around the ball if the players aren't near the ball. This is why we saw ourselves keep possession well in our half/on the half way line but not in the final third. The attackers are too hasty to make runs and the midfield then drop too deep. Players need to occupy the area outside the box/30 yards out from the goal. The centre of the pitch is the most important area and yet we neglect it.
I think Rodgers will be a bit disappointed with how the goal was scored, terrific strike yes, but there wasn't a great deal of play leading up to the goal and it was a hopeful shot - his reaction showed this.
Maybe this is a harsh view but I think it's where we can improve.

I don't think he will be dissapointed with the goal, it was a cracker. The number of hoofs from defenders and the goalkeeper on the other hand...
I think Brendan is still deciding whether he wants to send Sterling out on loan this season, which is why we saw him tonight, I wouldn't count on seeing him every game.

It's a fair enough view on this individual game. We were dreadful to be fair and we defended too deep for my liking , especially when we had possession of the ball. We looked better when they started chasing the game after Downing's great hit.
There was a distinct lack of creativity in midfield. Spearing was error prone and Henderson and Gerrard lacked energy and movement.
However, we are still in pre season, so the payers match fitness is sorely lacking, whilst are opponents were match sharp.
Happy with the result and it's Brendan's first win , but the performance was cack under mitigating circumstances. To say there is room for improvement is a massive understatement.
