Defensively it starts at the back with Neuer, has revolutionised the role of a sweeper keeper, no longer a bystander between the sticks he is a fully functional 11th man.

Integral is work rate and minimising the space in which the opposition can operate today. Neuer allows us to play a high line. Our defence has pace and is comfortable in possession, we look to keep it simple and risk free at the back.

Off the ball we are going to play a highly structured system, key here is pressing the space as a cohesive unit. When they are in possession we look to get 10 men behind the ball and cut off the supply line going forwards, allow the sideways pass however contain them to where we want them to play, if they want to go forward ensure it’s with maximum risk.

This will ensure hesitancy in attack and very little momentum to the play. Indecision in who is going to make that ‘killer pass’, their most influential players having to drop deep to pick the ball up and fans on their back will result in urgency and mistakes, and this is where we will look to win the ball back, preferably higher up the pitch.

Keep up with the structure and pressing of space at all times, we will not allow them to coax us out and create gaps, possession based without purpose will not hurt us as something will have to eventually give.

If they bypass and have the ball in our half, ideally we should look to keep the threat through the middle to a minimum and force them out to the flanks. We cut off options in field and with the quick FB’s we posses ensure they run up a blind alley. If they manage to find a cross we have two CB’s in the middle who are very physically and aerially dominating.

All this is dependent on structure and organisation, as soon as we lose the ball, we get back as a solid unit and get to task.

CB’s need to stay tight throughout, stick to positions and never get dragged out wide, big and strong dealing effectively from service out wide or staying close and working in tandem if through the middle, never isolate yourselves.

Mf trio in our system today will allow us to compress the space off the ball and congest the midfield, we force them back in their own half, high energy and dominance.
Off the ball attackers need to complete defensive duties, work together and quick on their toes, if one goes they all go.

In terms of our defensive output two key aims are being tough to break down and secondly looking to win the ball back as quickly as possible, if we are on the ball for longer periods playing at a high tempo, they will have to chase and therefore tire more quickly as the match goes on.

Operating with a high line ensures we can exert pressure further up the field and win the ball in dangerous areas, an important aspect of today’s game we should look to be quick to exploit them, don’t allow them to get bodies back and look for the runs of the forward/s with an early release.

Possession wise ball retention is key as is playing with pace and purpose, movement is vital, we pass and move to create space and look to get the forwards on the ball as much as possible.

Draw them out, outnumber them in midfield or pin them back on the flanks so they have to shuffle numbers across from elsewhere to assist. Ensure they lose their structure off the ball and then target and expose the space in the area they leave behind.

If they are quick to press and overload an area of the pitch in our half, we suck them in and switch the play at a rapid rate. At times looking for the diagonal cross-field ball over the top to the flanks and driving into space.
FB’s go one at a time with the other sitting back, priority is with Alves however this is dependent on the flank we are getting most success.

Khedira sits back, shielding the back 4 and man marking their AM. He allows the two in front of him to operate with a certain degree of freedom. The onus on these two is to dominate in central areas and get others into space through linking the play and creating gaps.

When in possession higher up the field, I want Matuidi playing between the lines and engaging Busquets throughout. In this box to box role, keep him deep and tie him down with aggression. Isolate him from his midfield partner and allow little influence on the play.

Kroos is the initiator in attack, as we advance with the ball so does he. Free role when we have the ball so will look to play between the lines and pick his passes, look to operate in the final 3rd as much as possible and creates gaps in their back line.

Our wingers should always be on the move and never look to sit still, constantly look to make runs in behind and at times come deep to get involved in the play so Alves/Kurwaza can overlap. We should look to target their FB’s and isolate them 1v1 throughout the game

Lewandowski plays his natural game, off the ball he is tireless and a willing runner, when in possession should look to make himself an outlet, link the play and go beyond to finish opportunities.

Crucial game for us, squeeze higher up the pitch and don’t allow them to play their natural possession based game today, whilst looking to dominate in higher areas throughout.

Defensively it starts at the back with Neuer, has revolutionised the role of a sweeper keeper, no longer a bystander between the sticks he is a fully functional 11th man.

Attack the FB’s, overload one side of the pitch and ensure we can get our flankers in space, allow them to use their direct approach and change of gear. If they are quick to press and overload an area of the pitch to combat, we suck them in and switch the play at a rapid rate. At times looking for the diagonal cross-field ball over the top to the opposite flank and driving into space.

C – Neuer
FK-s – Kroos
Corners – Kroos
Pens – Lewandowski

Subs:
60th minute – Nainggolan > Matuidi – Nainggolan is tireless, full of energy and strong in the tackle. Thrives in the box to box role and will ensure we’re on top in midfield.

70th minute – Coman > Martial – a like for like, Coman is a lethal outlet on the flanks, raw pace and v direct. Attack their tiring fb and exploit gaps at the back, a game changer.

80th min – if losing/draw – Welbeck > Kroos – (4-4-2 – attack) – Welbeck partners Lewandowski up front and we pump the ball into the box.

80th min – if winning – Savic > Kroos – 5-3-2 (Turan moves MF, Coman ST) 5 at the back, 3 in mf, rigid defensively. 2 forwards come back and defend but can counter when the opportunity arises.

Aggressive, on heels looking to win ball back
