RVP in the past has played on the wing, as a 2nd striker and as the main forward. I think he would be more than capable playing as a wide forward without any defensive responsibilities. The front 3 of RVP, Rooney and Nani are all versatile, so they will also be able to change positions through out the course of a game.
This formation will also allow Kagawa to play in a more natural position instead of trying to shoe horn him into the left wide slot.
With Carrick and Cleverly behind Kagawa we should also be able to keep the ball for longer periods over 90 minutes. All three can pass, keep the ball and play a deadly through ball.

I don't think RvP has the pace to play wide.

I really wouldn't like to see RVP shunted out right.
De Gea
Rafael. Rio. Vidic. Evra
Carrick. Anderson
Nani. Rooney. Kagawa
RVP
For me. I think with Evra and Rafaels ability going forward it will allow Rooney to go further and Kag and Nani to tuck inside.
Evra and Rafael would have to work hard to get back and Carrick and Ando would need discipline when we don't have the ball but I think 'with' with ball, that's our strongest lineup.
Over the course of a season though, these articles are meaningless as rotation, injuries, form and fitness are important.
I feel that on form and playing right, this is our strongest 11. Opposition and those listed above play a huge FA for though and I think we will see a variety of combos.
IF Ando and Cleverley stay fit and we can compete in CM though, it will be an incredibly exciting season.
Potential IMO to be the best football we have played in years. Pace, flair, trickery, through balls, one touch football.
Cannot wait till Monday night!!

RvP doesn't have the stamina to play wide. He'll be up front

Rafael is our only right back. Valencia doesn't have the defensive nous or left foot required to play there.
Nani on form is probably our best player, although obviously Valencia can play if he is having a poor patch.
Kagawa would play as a very narrow winger, interchanging with Rooney who would play off RvP.
The midfield spot alongside Carrick is up for grabs.
Ando - can be great when fit and works well with Carrick.
Scholes - Awesome, but will tire easily and doesn't offer much defensively.
Cleverley - Needs to push on from last season and stay fit.
Fletcher - if he recovers from his illness who can still be a solid player.

RVP has better technique than Rooney. RVP in the hole > Rooney in the hole.
