The last couple of days there have been plenty of articles on Wayne so I thought I would pose this question. Where does Wayne rank alongside the best forwards we have had at the club in the last twenty five years?
Putting aside the world class argument, which is very subjective I would rate him as follows.
1. Cantona
2. Ronaldo
3. Tevez
4. Wayne
5. Van Nistlerooy
How good is Wayne to us?

That's the last time i really remember him being on fire.
...............
He was on fire at the start of last season.
He scored 8 in 4 games.

Do you base your opinion on a striker solely on their goal record?

Well, I am hardly likely to base it on the amount of saves he makes.
Sarcasm, aside, I base it on watching the matches. And Rooney was on fire during the first four games last year. Did you not watch them?

I did, but i think i value and admire different attributes to yourself.
I thought the Rooney of 16 - 20 years old was less prolific but a better player.
Everything looked natural at that time, although he is still a very good striker.
Just not as good as some like to think

Keep in mind that he plays in front of a good but not great midfield and for him to score 35 goals in 44 games last season is very impressive.
People go on too much about the 'old' Rooney. He's been playing constantly since he was 16 so it's only natural that he changes his game a bit as he gets older.
He does more for the team than Ruud but scores nearly as many goals so he's doing alright for me. There are far more urgent things to sort out in this United team before criticising Rooney for anything.

Our midefield create plenty of chances, Rooney rarely makes a chance for himself.
My point is that hes changed for the worse, agree players mature and make alterations.
His best asset when he was young was his dribbling but this seems to of vanished. When we bought him he was still growing and within 3 or 4 years he lost his turn of pace and agility/balance with the ball.
I look at van persie, he can do everything Rooney does but better plus he looks at complete ease whilst doing it.
The reason his younger days are constantly mentioned is because so many of us put him on a pedastol he is not worthy of.
Hes often labelled technically elite, kagawa showed everyone hes simply not.
However, he is clinical when on form and has a good all round game. Just not a great all round game

What really puzzles me is where did that talent between 16 and 20 go?
Has it been trained out of him? Is it because he's been playing so long? Because at 26 with no major injuries of note he shouldn't have lost his explosive pace or ability to run at a player and beat them. Watch him in Euro 2004 and he was amazing.
Giggs and Owen both lost their pace because of continued injuries but Rooney has only really sufferred with foot injuries.
I certainly think something is amiss. And if it's just down to Wayne's bad diet and smoking then he deserve all the criticism he gets.
Still, he'll be my captain in fantasy football this weekend. Come on Wayne, roll back the clock to 2004.

So basically lets ignore the fact he has added so much to his alround game and concentate on the fact he doesn;t dribble then?
How old are you? 10 or something?
Rooney is far far more the complete player than he was as a teen and did not lose his pace 4 years after joining us. Go check out his goal a couple of seasons ago when he rean the length of the pitch passing 5 aresnal players who had a good head start on hom paying particular attention to the explosive last 15 yards
Rooney just isn't fit for some reason

Op must be a wum.
Tevez? Carlos Tevez? Even in that one season where he shined, Wayne was better.
And every season Wayne has scored and performed better than Carlos-goingtopractisemygolfswing-Tevez.
And Rooney - despite his failings in recent internationals- has been better for his country than Tevez.
If we are going by that, why not have Henrik Larsson or Diego Forlan or even RVP?
It is well known here that i am one of Wayne's biggest detractors. I christened him Ricky Hatton of football etc
But even i must admit that for us, Wayne, on the whole has been a superstar. And bar RVN, Ronaldo or Cantona since the Premier League started, no forward has been more vital or impressive.
My major issue is that Rooney has not fulfilled his potential and i believe that he CAN do better, he must DO better and he owes us.

Didn't messi just destroy Brazil in the summer? It's a myth that he doesn't perform for his country where as it's a fact that Wayne looks lost at that level.
---------------------------------------------------
You mean where Messi scored a hat-trick but had quite a poor game by his standards? And it was a 'friendly'. So destroying Argentina in a 'friendly' is a big deal now?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for Tevez, he leads the line for city and his country. Without doubt he is a world class player and i would say he was performing better with us than he has at city, which shows how good he is.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Like i said Rooney's recent form in internationals has been abysmal but Tevez's is even worse. He has been terrible for Argentina for years now
OP, Tevez is a top player. I would have preferred him over Berbatov as he suited us more.
But you clearly dont know much about football or you are not the sharpest tool in the box as your arguments for Tevez being a better player than Rooney (for Utd or other) is fatuous.
Tevez is very good player but Rooney is demonstrably better.
