Andy Murray - The Long Road Ahead

He has done it.

A massive hoodoo which has dogged British tennis for years and years has finally been lifted. No longer will we need to watch black and white video's to see the last British male success in the Slams. No longer will we need to watch Virginia Wade and think christ you haven't aged well. It is a burden that troubled many players from Roger Taylor to Tim Henman. So near, yet so far.

Andy had done what he has been prohpesised to do. Win a Slam. Whilst this achievement has sent shockwaves done the British tennis world, he knows that real hard work lays ahead.

Federer and Nadal are the flag bearers for un-relented success across the board. Andy has a chance now. He has proven now he can hang with the best. An ageing genius in Federer and the modern day 6 million dollar man in Nadal is weakening. Djokovic really has remained constant in consistency in 2012 at the Slams. Murray has matched Novak this year in terms of a Slam and RU spot (though Novak has 2)

Murray needs to hit this road running. I know he will be savouring this moment and title, but I know he will be itching to get back out on that court to experience these feelings even more. There is no harm in a gap in Slam success. When Federer won Wimbledon, it took another 6 months for him to win, win and win. Nadal had years of just RG success and that changed in time and transfered to the other Slams. Djokovic had a 3 year barren spell before cleaning up in 2011 and even won a Slam this year. I am sure Lendl will be saying to him "1 Slam is nice isn't it? But 3-4 Slams is even nicer"

I can't wait for the WTF. It will be buzzing with people wanting to see the US Open Champ. I hope that Murray can end 2012 in style and then kick off to new greater heights in 2013.

FIVE stars from me for one of the best articles I have read for a long time

I've been looking for a thread to post my congratulations to Andy and his fans that hasn't been overrun by WUMs and found this gem. Great article LK.

What a fantastic achievement by Andy and I am overjoyed at his win. I'm ridiculously happy for his many fans that have had to put up with so much rubbish over the years from the Anyone But Murray brigade. This victory must be all the sweeter for that.

Well done Novak on another great tournament.

Must be a good thread if you and I are posting on it tennisfan

I couldn't be more happy for Britains best tennis player. He has been putting the work in for a long time now, and I didn't care if he won a Grandslam or not, all I wanted to see was 100 percent committment and effort and he always gave me that. What more can one ask for?

If he had beaten djokovic 6:0 6:0 6:0 I would have been less impressed with him then than I am now.

He had never won a Slam, was playing the most dangerous oppononent available and had just lost 2 sets in a row, and still dug deep and grabbed that fifth set and the title.

We got high drama and a British winner.

My tennis season is complete now

A fantastic win for various reasons. Obviously gets the monkey of first Brit to win a slam for 70+ years, it portrayed massive guts and self-belief to turn around the match in that fifth set especially considering Murray's past history in slam finals, he became the first player to beat Djokovic on a hard court in a slam for two years in a run stretching for twenty seven unbeaten matches and he toughed it out to wear down the most competitive and toughest player on the tennis circuit.

Lendl says that best is yet to come, so expect another 4-5 slams easy.
Djoko's team has let him down, he has played far too many unimportant matches this year, Monte Carlo and Cincy are prime examples.

Thanks for comments guys. Very generous

I can't wait for the next tournament. Seeing him with the title is just stuff dreams are made of. Will keep the match on my Sky planner for a very long time

Great article I honestly feel that Andy will win at least one more of the big ones next season (hopefully more) but for now I really hope he is enjoying life and soaking up the fact that he has finally done it! Good lad
