something like a 03/53 or 04/54 plate will do....
mileage no more than 75k

VW Polo is a decent wee car. I've got one and havent had a minutes trouble with it.

I had a Peugeot 206 for my first car and loved it man
Would probably still have it now, if some lass never smashed into the back of it!
Cheap insurance
Cheap Road Tax
Cheap to run
All you really need for your first car...
Negatives, are that once you hit more than 80mph, it feels like bits are going to start breaking off it!

Put all your desired criteria like age, mileage, cost, fuel type, distance you are willing to travel to buy it etc etc into the relevant sections of:
www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars
and it will narrow things down and give you tons of ideas...a brilliant website when you are at the planning stage

VW polo is a great wee car but a word of caution, make sure it has had it's timing belt changed.These are due to be changed at 60000 miles, if it hasn't been changed it will cost you about 400 all in to change it. Otherwise the polo is a great choice.

Japanese cars are far and away the best for reliability. A wee 04 Civic would comfortably run for at least another 5 years with no problems.
