John Bond

I heard earlier today that John Bond had passed away. This is very sad news. I recall West Ham teams during the 1960's coming to play at Bata Sports in East Tilbury, and how I somehow managed to get into the one-and-only Grandstand, find John in one of the few reserved seats they had at the ground and secure his autograph on the match programme. Somewhere along the line I managed to get Johnny Byrne's and Lawrie Leslie's too. This would have been around 1964/65.

As I say, very sad to hear of his death.

You blokes are probably wondering how I am connecting with the past, West Ham and Bata Sports. My folks worked at that shoe factory near to the Bata Sports ground and West Ham fulfilled a pre-season friendly there for several seasons during the 1960's. To miss the opportunity to see this match was just unthinkable and one year, either 1965 or 1966, we had Peters, Moore and Hurst there. This would have been played in the August. One year, when Laurie Leslie kept goal, it finished 8-3, but another year the score was 10-1 or 10-0.
