Liverpool overcame West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.

The Reds actually made a disastrous start to the match when Liam Ridgewell's free kick was spilled clumsily by goalkeeper Brad Jones, and Gabriel Tamas was gifted an easy opening goal.

But Liverpool soon started settling into the game and started playing the good passing football that they have often shown early on this season. And it was another goalkeeping error that handed them the equaliser on 17 minutes. Nuri Sahin received the ball from Andre Wisdom and he took a low shot from 25 yards which Ben Foster allowed to sneak inside his near post.

The Reds then went on to dominate for the majority of the game and had other chances to score through Samed Yesil and Sebastian Coates. Youssouf Mulumbu should have seen red for a reckless challenge on Jordan Henderson but escaped without any card, only to be booked moments later for a much softer challenge.

Liverpool brought on Suso and Jerome Sinclair with nine minutes remaining, the latter becoming the youngest player to ever play for Liverpool's first team at just 16 years and six days old, beating the record previously held by Jack Robinson.

And it was fellow substitute Suso who was involved in the winning goal just moments later. He ran forward with the ball before feeding Oussama Assaidi, who also gave a promising display throughout, on the left hand side. He then crossed it in for Sahin to tap in at the far post.

West Brom pushed for an equaliser, but Liverpool saw the game out as they began the defence of their League Cup won under Kenny Dalglish.

After the match, Liverpool were drawn at home to Swansea City in the fourth round, a tie which will see Brendan Rodgers take on his former club.

Yeah I think the rivalry is too intense for them to put out reserves.

Agreed Toor, I thought Yesil was really good for a lad his age. However, he does need to develop physically. After that he will be top draw.

Is this the most comments we've had for a match thread?

Was a great match thread, was amazing to see some optimism and less doom and gloom about the board. Less slating of the players, owners, system and manager too, which was great.

I reckon that's because of all the youngsters getting a run out with next to no bad marks against their names, well, not enough for them to get slated like carra etc.

Even the most negative fans must surely be able to see the way we are playing is the way to go now? It's exciting stuff.

We get slated for saying it but we've just had some poor luck, it's not for the want of trying, given the possession we get and the chances on goal.

I hope it bucks some ideas up.
