should teams be allowed to stop players?

football is simply a job, if a more attractive and higher paying job became available i would jump at the chance. why are footballers not allowed to do this?

a footballers career at the top level is relativly short 10-15 years so should certain individuals have a right to say where they can and cannot play?

before you start bringing up contracts, players have no choice but to sign them in order to actually play for a team, not like they have a choice.

i think the whole system needs looking at again. barca want fabregas, fabregas wants to play for barca and are willing to pay a fair fee, arsenal should not have a say in this mans future

"barca and are willing to pay a fair fee"

and by the way their are actually contracts in other jobs. Even someone on 40k a year will often have to give at least 6 months notice.

Yup....if I get into my proposed PHD thing I can't leave til January if I hand my notice in at the start of semester 1 or til May if I decide to quit after November...

...they will have agreed to pay me for a fixed period...to forego that agreement means fulfilling certain expectations.

Contracts are there to protect clubs AND players.

The club cannot simply sack a player after a few games or months to get the wage bill down. This protects their livelyhood and allows them to make long term plans for the future, e.g accomodation/schools for kids etc.

The club receives protection in that the player cannot merely leave mid season because they don't feel like playing anymore, also they cannot merely join a rival for more money each summer.

It's the same in any walk of life, in business the contract is normally for 2 years with a 3 months notice period for both parties.

In football it is different, as the carreer span of a player is very short (perhaps just 15-20 years) and players move jobs often, so the clubs need to be compensated for this.

Players also will get a compensation deal if their contract is terminated by a club, usually for the ammount they would have been paid for the duration of the remaining period of the contract.

If it's the player who wishes to terminate the contract he must either buy it out, or another employer must pay a fee for the player to leave.

It's quite straightforward really.

Any idiot who suggests there should be no contracts is clearly that....... and idiot!

Firstly they're not offering a fair fee. If they were then we'd have sold him last year. Barca are lo-balling his price big time. No offer under 40 million should ever have been made for Cesc.
..........

who says fabregas is worth 40 million?

1/6 strike rate for his club and only 1/10 for spain
the only domestic trophy he has ever won is a 1 fa cup, his stats dont exactly suggest he is worth half that

What are you babbling about, he's made a perfectly valid OP?

I like how you put him down, and yet don't actually explain explain it to him.

Football IS a job, in my job I can give a weeks notice and leave when ever I want.

Since you didn't seem to want to deal with my previous post OP, I'll try again, from a slightly different direction.

See if you can find grounds to delete thiis.

Ever heard of a seller's market?

That's when the owner of an asset doesn't have to sell. It means they can set a price which suits them, rather than a price that would suit a buyer.

This is what the oafs at Barcelona seem unable to comprehend. Arsenal do not need to sell. In order to make Arsenal consider selling, the offer will have to fit with Arsenal's wishes rather than Barcelona's.

Got that? Or did it go by too quick?
