The two were different. Bill Shankly was an extroverted showman and his strength was his ability to encourage and motivate. Roy Evans once said ''Bill Shankly could make a player feel like a million or he could make them feel like tuppence''.
He wasn't the best tactically, but he had a unique ability to get 200% out of his players. One example springs to mind is when he said to a 20 year old Kevin Keegan ''Aye son, you'll play for England''. Kevin Keegan worshipped Bill Shankly because Shanks believed in him.
Bob Paisley on the other hand was an introverted tactical genius. He hardly spoke, but prefered to let his teams do the talking for him. Its a well known fact, Bob Paisley couldn't give team-talks and just said ''Same again lads''.
Mark Lawrenson once said that ''If Bob Paisley was okay with a player, he didn't speak to them'. However although quiet, when he had to use kidiology on his own players he did.
One of the famous examples was with Ian Rush, a shy kid, that got fed up of Kenny Dalglishs' mickey taking. He said ''I signed you to score goals, so be more selfish''. Ian Rush had just handed in a transfer request, and Bob let on that he accepted it.
Ian Rush went on a goal-scoring run, and never looked back. The transfer request was never accepted.
The thing is, and this is why its so hard to pick a better manager is, I doubt it if Shanks would have been able to sustain the success Bob did. I also don't think Bob would have been able to build the empire like Shanks did.
Both worked well together as boss and assistant boss, because they were like chalk and cheese.

Even as a Utd fan I found them both awesome with different styles, and out of respect I couldn't say who was better.

What difference does it make who was better.
They were both fabulous in their own way, that's enough to know.
