My laptop is a Dell Vostro A860 a week go my power cable started crackling due to a tear in the plastic covering. Since then i now have no sound, my laptop when viewing videos speeds up playback, it freezes when i move it (eg to put it on the floor) and i cannot update the device drivers.
Ive restore, reformatted but to no avail! Is my laptop ready for the scrapheap?
If so are thinkpads any good? As i have seen them on the cheap.

What happens if you try to use the laptop without the power cable? Do you get the same problems? However it does sound like some of the motherboard components have been damaged by shorting. So added to this is its a 3 year old laptop i may also make the assumption that maybe the battery is shot?
