Keith Millen has today given a statement that sounds very much like one of those statements given by clubs to appease fans when they sell one of their star players.

It uses all the textbook phrases like 'We have done everything we can'. I've no doubt though that this statement was given to alert Premier League clubs of his availability because Bristol will do everything they can to stop him coming to us because it's looking more and more likely that he'll leave.
The one thing that would make this certain would be a transfer request from Nicky but I doubt he'll do that unless there is no chance of a Premier League move.
Nicky Maynard - Millen Admitting Defeat

Is there anything wrong with Maynard weighing up his options though. He has no loyalty to LCFC and it's a big move for his career at this stage and he's coming to a point when he's entering his supposed prime as a footballer.
He'll probably have to consult his family about the move as well so that can take time. We are not a Manchester United that are world famous clubs where players would walk up the motorway to play for them. Our biggest attraction is not are history or our status but our money and believe it or not, money isn't the sole motivation for some players.
I don't have a problem with Nicky Maynard weighing up his options and seeing if he can get a Premier League move because that's where the boy wants to play. Granted, he can't wait forever for his PL move but he is allowed time to consider all things instead of making a decision there and then.

Greatness - The problem witht that is that every day he spends weighing up his options is another day of bonding and blending that he won't be doing with a new team for the coming season. He has effectively already had a couple of months to think about this and it's time for him to make a decision.
Perhaps he already has and that decision is simply to stay at Bristol City without committing his long term future there.

I agree with you mate, he won't sign a new contract for them but may well see out his current one and leave for free.
Doesn't make much sense though for the club to fail to get his signature on a new deal and effectively throw 5 mill down the swanny and let him walk for free, how can that be good business?

Maybe, but if he'd decided that then he would have signed the contract by now. I still think he's waiting for a PL move and if he one of those clubs bids for him I think he'll be off but it's what he chooses to do if he doesn't get a PL club that's the interesting thing.
But you're right, he can't spend too much longer umming and arring. If a PL club wanted him, I think they'd have come in for him now.

Sorry Dunge, I thought you meant he would sign a new deal.
Even if he wants to sit out his current deal, I don't think Bristol will let him do that because they'd rather loose him for £5 million than for free.

So at what point do Brizzle decide to accept a bid?
Presumably it has to be before the August transfer window ends because then by the time January comes around he'll only have six months left so will be 3 mill max, in my opinion anyway!!

I would have thought that too, but there are issues. For keeping him with no further contract, they'd get:
- A season of Maynard in their team.
- Avoiding a potential reputation as a 'selling club' (particularly if to us)
- The chairman being seen to keep his word when he expressed that he didn't want Maynard to be sold in the Championship.
Is that worth £5m? Particularly if staving off relegation depends on his goals...
Suddenly it becomes a difficult question, IMO. I can see why they'd hold out, even if they lost him for less in January or nothing at all next June.

I think Millen said previously that if Maynard hadn't signed a new deal near the end of the window they'd have to consider the bids made. They couldn't make that decision too late otherwise they wouldn't be able to get in a replacement. Also, if they wait too long we might move to someone else and there aren't exactly a lot of clubs queuing up to make an offer.

I'm interested to know why NM thinks he is worthy of the Premiership?
Perhaps at the lower end (Norwich, Swansea, QPR - no insult intended) but the more secure clubs have bigger fish to fry. Equally, these clubs have a greater potential buying power and won't be held ransom over the price.
So BCFC hang on to the bitter end, which could be the end of August or January but is most definitely next May and what happens to his price? £5m now but then probably falling to £3/3.5m in late August, £1.5m in January and diddly squat in May. Not good business sense.
Bristol seem almost paranoid about letting the player go to a Championship "rival" but so far have done little in the way of acquisitions to suggest a serious assault on the top six.
The player may also be letting his contract run down for
the prospect of a signing on fee. But this can be arranged and his market value is currently about as high as it can go.
So do I think he is worth £5m now? From the point of his injury record - No. But as the final piece in the jigsaw - possibly yes.
Leicester have made massive strides in recent weeks but we haven't got the so-called "20 goals a season" man. Would hate to see it fall apart for that last piece.

tbh its dragged on far to long now if he was gunna stay it would have been sorted weeks ago .. he is a good player but in pitman i think we have got a ready made replacement so you lot are welcome to him if he goes to you .. i dont think he would be that good this season different style of play and he took half a season to get used to playing for us
