That people often say that Maxi and Meireles don't put in enough effort when defending whereas the stats disagree.

Maxi has earned his place in the squad. Meireles was great last season so again no problems there. If we have a bigger squad and more competition for places that can only be a good thing.

Well then it makes you wonder what other players must've been doing if Meireles apparently pulls out of tackles all the time yet still has one of the highest tackling rates in the PL
