Number Of Subs Allowed Changed From 7 To 5

The number of subs allowed on the bench for a matchday will be reduced from 7 to 5 for the coming season to help smaller clubs avoid extra costs.

I think it's one of the most stupid and pointless changes I've ever seen. If teams think it's better for them to name 5 subs then name 5 subs but now youth and academy products won't get a look in and I think we could end up with a few more unhappy players this season.

Why should we be penalized for having a bigger squad. It also inhibits managers' influence on games i.e. a player like Oakley could be brought on to close games out but he's unlikely to get a place on the bench now.

I agree. If anything, this is going to harm the progress of youngsters.

Youngsters could be brought on if a team is either heavily losing or heavily winning, now they wont gamble by putting a youngster in the squad at all.

Pointless rule with no common sense.

Yes, seems like a backward step to me. Sven's job just got a bit harder.

If it's make Sven's job harder with all this wealth at his disposal (in comparison to all the others clubs who have to do the same) then maybe this was the result they were looking for, evening the gap with those clubs who have small squads and those who are looking to have 2 players in every position. Perhaps this way the game is determined by the 11 players fielded and the tactical know how of the manager to pick a winning team – surely 5 subs is enough? I’m not sure youth development is determined by this factor at all and the loan market is a better option than the odd few minutes.

Im surprised by the move but if the small clubs werent happy with it, why not have 7 players for the Championship and the classic 5 for the Leagues One and Two.
I mean it would be silly for the top league to continue this and the leagues below to stop it.
