United star Shinji Kagawa picked up a knee injury against Braga on Tuesday and faces four weeks on the sidelines, meaning he will miss Sunday's trip to Chelsea and the following weekend's encounter with Arsenal, plus the return Champions League game with Braga and his country's World Cup qualifier with Oman on November 14. Chris Smalling has returned to training after a broken metatarsal but Phil Jones (knee) and Anders Lindegaard (thumb) remain sidelined as United look to record their first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge since 2002.

Sir Alex Ferguson: “Last season we did really well to rescue it after being 3-0 down. I think we scored three goals in about eight minutes or something like that. We should have won it really. We were the better team in the first half yet we were 3-0 down just after half-time. It was amazing. Apart from last season if you look at the last six or seven seasons before that it was always us and Chelsea vying for the title so that gives you an idea of how we’ll approach this game on Sunday – it’s going to be hard one."

Frank Lampard will be sidelined for at least a fortnight with a calf problem, manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed. Lampard limped out of Tuesday's Champions League defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk with a recurrence of the injury he suffered before the international break and will miss Sunday's game against Manchester United, the Capital One Cup clash with the same opponents, a trip to Swansea and the Champions League return against Shakhtar. John Terry will serve the remainder of his racism ban in the first three of those games while Marko Marin is back after a minor injury.

Roberto Di Matteo: "It's still a little bit early in the season for a game like this to be decisive. They are a great competitor of us, we are playing at home and we want to keep our home record very good, have a good game and keep the distance from them. It's a massive game for both clubs, a classic in the fixture list. We are still in good shape I think and this group of players always responds to a bad result. We always pay attention to players' behaviour and the mood in the camp, so certainly after defeat it is not the best within the dressing room but we have a great game coming up and we can show everybody we are a strong team."
