Liverpool's bid to defend the Capital One Cup ended on Wednesday night as they were dumped out of the competition by Swansea City at Anfield.
Swansea started off defensively before growing in confidence as the first half wore on. They scored the opening goal on 34 minutes and it was completely deserved. Jonathan de Guzman crossed it in from a corner kick on the right and Chico made a run in and headed it in.
Brendan Rodgers brought on Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez at half time, for the struggling Joe Cole and Samed Yesil. The arrival of Liverpool's two best players prompted an improved performance in the second half.
Gerrard came inches away from equalising for Liverpool as his 25 yard effort struck the left hand post, and Stewart Downing failed to follow up the rebound.
But on 72 minutes, Swansea broke and Pablo Hernandez played it through to Nathan Dyer to slot in.
Just four minutes later, Liverpool gave themselves a chance of salvaging the game when Gerrard's free kick found the head of Suarez who reduced the deficit back to one goal. But as the Reds searched for an equalising goal, Swansea broke again in the fourth minute of injury time and Michu crossed it for De Guzman to wrap it up and end Liverpool's interest in this competition.

Most frustrating thing about this now is that I bet Arsenal go on to win it. Fuming if that happens!

Same old problems if you ask me. Not enough forward runs from players and players not making themselves room to receive a pass in the final third.
If I had a pound for each time I watched our front 3 static in their position when our midfielders had the ball 25 yards out, I'd have enough money for FSG to have sanctioned the Dempsey transfer.

Sahin was rested as he is still getting to grips with his fitness and the league.

For me Sahin can be just like Xabi Alonso for us but like Xabi Alonso needs to understand that you don't get time on the ball in this league and you need to get stuck in. The problem like you say is he's only on loan and we could give him the time, he'll start playing and before we know it, he's off.

Thanks for the opinions. Interesting. TOOR, your diagnosis of the situation (fitness, adapting) sounds worryingly familiar to what happened to him at Madrid and dragged on the whole season.
Mourinho said that the reason he wanted him in the PL was that it was the perfect place to improve/acquire certain skills/aspects of his game. You'd think lack of fitness is just temporary, but after well over a year without any major problem, maybe the guy just doesn't train hard enough.
Time on the ball? Believe it or not, I saw so little of him at Madrid that I could hardly judge.
Shame if the guy doesn't make it, because I do like his 'slow-foot' playing style. The little I've seen reminds me in some way of Riquelme.
