In your own experiences, do they actually make that much of a difference when trying to bulk up, or are they a waste of money?

Yes, they work but if you don't lift weight, you'll just get fat.

There's nothing inherently special about protein shakes. At the end of the day, they are just protein.
Typical bodybuilders consume about 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight (although there's evidence suggesting such a target may be excessive), so if you're struggling to reach that target, protein shakes are very good.
If you can get enough protein in your diet without them, then there's no real need, but assuming you go with a cheap provider like MyProtein, Ironscience, or Bodybuilding Warehouse, they're a very cost effective way of getting protein in your diet - much cheaper than buying meat.
Hope this helps

But protein is what rebuilds the muscles after working out so its important to get some although I agree that carbs are vital for bulking.
