'Dirty Leeds'

The book by Robert Endeacott.

I've been reading this over the last little while in snippets...it's an account of the club between the years 1961-74. I think most would say our 'glory' years were in the early 70's. I reached the 1972-3 season and this is a passage from that....

"Falling match attendances were a worry too, although it was a national problem and not just restricted to West Yorkshire. Smaller crowds signified smaller gate receipts, naturally the most worrying thing for football club directors and chairmen. Various voices gave various opinions on why attendances were in decline: too many games, too high prices, too little value for money, a lack of entertainment, too much hooliganism and crowd trouble, violence on the pitch, soccer on TV too much, as well as the national side's decline."

Haha...I nearly fell off my chair...this was 40 years ago, even though it sounds like today, plus Leeds were possibly the top team in Britain at the time. Wow. Seems that we are never satisfied hey? Just shows that even if we were at the top of the Prem, we'd still be moaning.........maybe.

Reminds me of 'The Unforgiven' you could blank out teh names of some of teh people and you might as well be reading about Leeds today.

Crowds were always a problem, those who thing getting back to the Prem will just solve everything in terms of attendances need a rethink.

TheHayemaker....it's the viewings of those years through the eyes of a teenager who wants to ultimately play for Leeds. It really though kind of just turns into a list of the results through that period and to be honest isn't that good. I'd recommend it for visits to the 'thrown', if you know what I mean.

I know the author very well have read a couple of his other books, it is a work of fiction. But it is a bit of what has happened in his life.
