So the MLS tournament is over and true to form SpursBoy won the day yet again, but this was his toughest challenge yet! Here is the review hope you enjoy.
Starting with Group A and favourites to progress were RVPM and Tyke, Tyke did this pretty easily with victories over minnow 1man and RVPM himself, but struggled to a 2 – 2 draw with Voom who was very impressive and losing in a dead-rubber to Ludy; however progress was secured for the first time in two tournaments. This is where Voom comes in, very impressive in the group stages drawing only to Tyke and beating the rest with relative ease. Disappointment for RVPM, the draw with 1man did him no favours and out he went. Ludy’s highlight was the win against Tyke with disappointing loses against RVPM and Voom and then losing a lead against 1man.
On to Group B with SpursBoy the main man in this one securing progression with more of a fuss than usual drawing two blanks with SKA and defensive specialist Oscar. However he would secure wins against newcomer Bale and super-minnow Tez to see him through. Second place was well up for grabs with Oscar, SKA and Bale doing their best to secure it however SKA dropped silly points against Tez, yet manages to draw with SpursBoy, weird. He beat Oscar 3 – 0 but losing to Bale was fatal and he went out with a respectable five points. Bale seized the second spot remaining unbeaten against everybody bar SpursBoy and Oscar picked up another respectable 5 points. Tez made history by securing his first ever point, his record now reads played 12, drawn 1, lost 11, impressive!
Group C saw RoryT tipped to top it, but sadly he had to withdraw, leaving a 4 team group which newcomer Terry took in his stride, winning all three of his games, job done. Following behind him was Kent who demolished Psycho and Choice and narrowly lost to SpursBoy, he also went through. Former winner Psycho came back with a victory over ChoiceCity, who sadly couldn’t repeat last tournament’s heroics.
The Final Group D was a tough one where any of the entrants could top it, Comu qualified once again leaving him with a perfect qualifying record, three tournaments, three qualifications. JAG would soon follow him, making easy work of Dog and Fab, the latter both finishing with one point and fighting out a dour 0 – 0 draw.
So on to the first quarter-finals since the Dutch Tournament and it saw an old rivalry in Comu v SpursBoy ignited yet again, Comu gave his all as usual, but SpursBoy doing what he does best, securing those narrow victories and progressing 1 – 0, unlucky Comu, you’ll get him one day.
Voom v Bale was next up, two newcomers and it was Voom who progressed with a 2 – 0 victory, credit to him, but also credit to Bale fine showing for the newcomer and hopefully he can build on this should he choose to return in the future.
To the other half of the quarter-final draw and it was Tyke v Kent, worth noting Kent had won the last three apperences between these two and an early goal showed once again he would dominate, however,. Tyke throw everything at him with a number of chances missed only for Kent to get another one late on, that’s the luck of the knock-outs I’m afraid, fine margins. Well done Kent.
Terry and JAG made up the last quarter-final and fought out a fierce 0 -0 draw which was settled by a JAG golden goal quick in the first-half, good showing Terry and a semi-final apperence for JAG!
So the semi-final saw the most impressive player so far Voom against the legend SpursBoy, SpursBoy was made to battle all the way and Voom could easily have won this, but SpursBoy thwarted him in golden goal time, yet another final for SpursBoy, he just doesn’t lose! Expect to see more of Voom in the future!
Second semi-final was Kent v JAG, Kent always a regular in the semis whilst JAG’s first appearance made for a quite game really settled by yet another early Kent goal, credit to JAG for getting this far, sure he will be thrilled with that, Kent moves on to do battle with SpursBoy in a repeat of last tournament’s final!
So here it is a chance for Kent to final get one over SpursBoy and win that elusive tournament prize, but no it was SpursBoy who said he had one of the hardest games in the tournament taking home his third trophy in a row with a golden goal victory! What a player, absolutely fantastic, something else. Can honestly say I have never anything like it.
