Vettel still an immature F1 driver

Sebastian Vettel still needs to mature as a Formula 1 driver according to former world champion Jacques Villeneuve, who believes the German "reacts like a child".

The Canadian, who won the Formula 1 title in 1997 with Williams, believes Vettel's Ferrari rival Fernando Alonso is a stronger driver when it comes to dealing with adverse situations.

Villeneuve, however, reckons Vettel is nearly invincible when he can lead a race from the front.

"I have no doubts: Fernando Alonso is the best, that's why I root for him," Villeneuve told Autosprint magazine.

Seb is super quick, but there is a difference with Fernando that emerges in case of an unfavourable situation.

"Alonso remains calm, cool, and rational, while Vettel most times gets upset, angry, screams and flicks the middle finger. He reacts like a child.

"These behaviours indicate two different states of maturity but, let's be clear, Sebastian is an ace too; however, he struggles more in critical situations.

"He looks almost unbeatable when he leads, but if he needs to catch up he becomes vulnerable."

Villeneuve downplayed Vettel's performance in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where the Red Bull driver finished in third position despite starting from the back.

And the Canadian thinks Alonso deserves to win this year's title.

"For me, it has confirmed what I think about Vettel," he added. "These are facts: while recovering from the back, he first got in contact with Senna who was ahead of him and damaged his front wing.

"Then he lost control of his car and crashed under the safety car. A very serious error that had light consequences. As for the rest, he has shown to be super quick, but he was lucky and I'm not changing my mind: Alonso deserves the 2012 title more."

The former world champion also praised Red Bull's technical boss Adrian Newey, whom he worked with during his stint at Williams.

"Many just draw him as a genius, while that's just a part of his immense power of team leader," he said. "He isn't a know-it-all who creates a winning car and pretends that anyone wins with it.

"In truth he is perhaps the humblest technician, the one that listens more to his drivers. The years and wins gone by haven't changed him: he never pontificates, he holds talks."

It's fascinating that so many F1 drivers past and present do not rate Vettel at all. They know the sport inside and out and appreciate talent but they all question the talent of the Newey Champion.

Alonso and Hamilton do not rate him as well. He also has to be constantly managed by his race engineer, something Christian Horner himself has said on numerous occasions.

Seb is excellent at leading from the front in the fastest car on the grid but is nowhere when the roles have changed as displayed by his abysmal performances this season prior to the massive upgrades RedBull provided. He only had 1 pole and 1 win prior to the upgrade and his team mate was beating him comfortably, so I wonder really at the people that consider him some supreme racing driver. He really just isn't.

You thoughts and comments are welcome

I agree, unless he is attempting to state that Vettel has already reached his peak. That would be more acceptable, but still incorrect in my opinion.

No idea what happened in the empty post above.

the great AFL

people are not seeing the wider picture with vettel which is he is only 25 yrs old and very likely a 3 x WDC very soon which is quite amazing if you really think about -

for one so young that has not reached his peak he is only going to soak up more knowledge as he matures even more which will make him an even more formidable driver --

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Vettel can surely only get better.

Vettel can obviously get better but the only way to improve his race craft is for him to race others and not disappear in the distance with his fizzy pop, illegal winged, traction controlled car.

The same Horner that took a wing of Webbers car and put it on Sebs car. The same Horner who constantly tells Mark to not race Seb

I think considering that no team was dominant for well over half of this season, you can only say that Vettel has put his stamp on the latter half of the season. Yes McLaren shot themselves in both legs, and yes Alonso has been very consistant, but Vettel has been also.

Constantly is a bit of hyperbole, to be honest. The fact that Horner and Webber co-own MW Arden must mean that their relationship isn't too bad.

The front-wing debacle is indefensible, as I have already stated.

“Out of interest, why do you believe that Vettel cannot mature as a driver? He's got plenty of time”
---------------------------------------------
I can not see into the future so I am unable to predict if he will improve or not. There is no rule in life that states that every individual improves year on year. A person can go through a bad patch.

Vettel makes too many mistakes which are compensated for by currently having a brilliant car.

“the level of ignorance on this board is truly staggering”
---------------------------------------------------------------

That comment is laughable coming as it does from the most ignorant person on this forum.
Perhaps if the poster had bothered to turn up to primary school once in a while he might have a better comprehension of English and post his comments in a style slightly better than that of a 7 year old child. His constant repetition of the same argument seems to indicate a lack of confidence in the point he is attempting to make.

still relying on personal abuse i see as a means to hide your incredibly naive f1 related comments -
