Apologies for the lack of input recently but thought I'd give a little assessment of Arsenal at the moment.
In my opinion Arsenal have a team full of quality players, yes the squad players need to improve so they can be trusted, but we have a world cup winner, 100 caps for Germany etc in the squad and we are clearly playing well below our capability.
I think this is due to our attack and midfield and the fact everyone is out of position, the defence has been very good this year, sidenote to the fact Szczesny has been excellent since he returned, really bossing the defence around so that's one positive.
But let's look yesterday, Arteta while being able to hold possession really well, is not a proper DM especially with the lightweight nature of our midfield and at Everton played much further forward.
Wilshere is being played too deep as shown while not back to full fitness, has shown glimpses of his attacking quality with a few wonderful flicks, turns and passes and should be where he can influence play, in my opinion he is more of a playmaker than Carzola.
Carzola is a wonderful player, but the role he is asked to play isn't right for him, he looks most dangerous when tricking past players, cutting inside before hitting a shot or slipping in a deft pass. In the centre he is too easily picked up and asked to play a Fabregas role of slipping the impossible ball through a well organised defence.
For Arsenal to play their game we need a Pires, Hleb or Nasri player on the wing to come inside and act as a wide playmaker to support the CAM. Carzola seems perfect for this role, with Theo playing on the right as a wide/ support striker and Giroud up front.
Last game we had 2 strikers playing as wingers and a winger as a striker, no surprise they had no thrust, it was a case of one creator (Carzola) and 3 finishers (Gervinho, Walcott and Podolski) who rely on getting into positions and running onto through balls. We need more creativity especially from the wide areas as what has saddened me most about our recent play is how few chances we make which is what makes me love Arsenal. In midfield, we need a proper DM and Arteta where Jack is currently, Jack to play where Carzola is (Ramsey as back up), Carzola to play where Podolski is, Theo or Gervinho on the right and Giroud or Podolski up front.
--------DM----Arteta-----
Walcott--Wilshere--Carzola
------------Giroud--------
or
---------------Coq----------Diaby-----
Gervinho-----Ramsey/Rosicky-------AM
-------------------Podolski--------
Any suggestions who we could sign in January in those positions?
Anyway that's what I reckon may work but hopefully Wenger can find the solution ASAP
In any case

Good article OP.
I agree mostly, I think our first team only needs a couple of additions, however for me it's the rotation that's the problem. The worst thing is that Song is exactly the sort of player we need right now, someone who get's involved in the thick of it, holds up play, and has got a long range pass or two in him

I think our team suits the 07/08 4-4-2 style with no wingers and just wide midfielders.

the team lacks pace and a ball winner.
we break so slowly you can get a cup of tea, come back and we will still be working our way up the pitch
one (of many) of the main threats in AW teams gone by was the power and pace of the counter attack.
I miss those days.
