I know he is one of the least popular of our players, but he looked like he was starting to find a bit of form on Saturday, after a long injury spell and a few very poor games.
He was involved in 3 of the 4 goals and also put the cross in for the ghost goal. His overall play was greatly improved and he was tracking back and getting stuck in a bit more then normal. I think having an interchangeable role suited him quite well.
If he could keep up that sort of performance, week in, week out... Would you say he is "UTD quality".... something our fans seem to hold against him.
When fit and getting a run in the team, he has rarely played badly for us and had a run, last Feb/March that was very, very good.
I think way to many of our fans just plain overlooked the fact the he was back in the team after months on the injury table.... Some of the other players would get the luxury of a few bad games while they re-adjusted.

For example we have De Gea who was a £16 million player sat on the bench when he should be playing. £16 million is a lot for a keeper and if he is being benched you would question why he was purchased

Again I don't disagree with your point but this is another poor example. De Gea is a baby - he could play potentially for another 20 years.
Spending £16m on a player does not mean that player is necessarily meant to be 1st choice immediately. The fee reflects his age and the fact that we could have him for a long long time and/or sell him and make our money back easily in future.

I think HNIC is matriculated at the same school of thought as Monsieur Rob and Hafi.

I still think Berba was poor. Fair enough he had technical ability but apart from SAF not managing him properly he wasnt that great a player anyway. Thats just my honest opinion. Also if Diouf was given a fair crack instead of being played on the wing, who knows he may have done a better job than Berba. For what we paid Berba offered very little apart from scoring a lot of goals in games against poor opponents, he could never do it in the big games.

When we signed Berba, and Liverpool signed Keane, I always thought both clubs/players would have done much better if they'd swapped.

I agree. Dont know how Berba would have done at Liverpool but Keane would have suited us much better. Both transfers were flops in the end, I know our fans were divided about Berba but IMO he just wasnt good enough.
One thing about Rooney you can guarantee is he turns up to big games, something Berba doesnt have, maybe its a mentality thing.

This was the time when Liverpool had Torres as their main striker, with N'Gog as their backup.

Maybe Torres and Berba could have worked?
I know this sounds stupid but I was hoping we would have signed Robinho at the time as he went to City.
That way we could have freed up Ronaldo to play up top with Rooney and Robinho either side of him.
