Big Bang Theory!

I know I am extremely late with this but I have recently discovered the phenomenon that is The Big Bang Theory.

I got through season 1 on the weekend and am half way through season 2 at the moment.

I have to say it really is a great series and quite different from the rest although I don't watch a lot of tv so not even too sure whats currently showing.

Love the geeky aspect to the show and all the characters are pretty funny although Sheldon is a cracker.

Unbelievably late I know but, thoughts?

to go against the fold here, I cannot stand the big bang theory, in my opinion it's just another over-done, over-acted in your face simple american sitcom that uses a laughter track to convince you that it's funny.

I have watched several episodes as my girlfriend likes it, but I just cannot see how the show got past Pilot stage.

the guys are so funny and its probably one of the finest shows made Chris. I think you need to get off your high horse and accept that alot of people really enjoy the programme and when your extravagant claims can be proved with science we might listen but until then please dont you dare say it is simple. That is out of order.

*sigh* why do some people seem to get very defensive to the point of being offended when someone dislikes their favourite show/video game/band?

I clearly acknowledged it was my opinion, I'm not going to apologise for that, as I'm entitled to state it. I'm hardly 'on my high horse' as you put it, I'm just disagreeing with people who like it.

Also, I'm not really sure what you are getting at with the 'proved with science' statement as that doesn't make any sense in the context. I can however, give you my reasons though for calling it a simple TV show. It is, essentially an unoriginal, by the numbers laughter-track riddled sitcom. There's no subtlety or real intelligence past the 'laugh a minute' one liners and puns, the heavy use of a laughter track also helps the illusion that even the poorest jokes are funny. It's good for simple, throw away comic relief at best where you can switch your brain off.
In my opinion, people think it's clever because it makes basic 'nerd' references to video games and comic books that the target audience are likely to have heard of.

also, the theme tune is annoying as hell.

I'm pretty sure it’s played in front of a live audience, so there’s no laughter track.

Well I think you are riding that high horse off into in the deranged sunset land you live in because you seem to be insisting I shouldn't love the show just because your opinion is savvy? Now I just can't believe some people would try and ruin the show for others just because they dont like the programme themselves. If you dont like the programme for some reason I can accept that. But when you start telling me the reasons I shouldnt enjoy watching it, thats too much. They make a programme for smart people who are tired of programmes not about science and for calling the theme tune annoying I think you really should listen again because its about our history.

OK, ok.... how about you take a step back here and try and understand that you've either completely misread or misunderstood what I wrote. I'm not insisting anything, I don't give two hoots whether or not you like the show, and I'm struggling to see where I've told you youre not allowed to love the show, as you put it?

Simply put opinion differed from yours, and you don't seem to like it. You asked me for 'scientific proof' of why I don't think it's a good show, and despite science having absolutely feck all to do with my opinion of a TV show, I took the liberty of turning your question into one that was logical and I answered it to the best of my ability.

Please accept that this is a forum for debate, there are going to be people who's opinion differs from yours, as it tends to happen in life, try not to get offended by it.

Personally, I think it's a very good show.
The first time I watched it was purely to see Kaley Cuoco ( Penny ) because I fancied her in 8 simple Rules. To be honest, I wasn't overly keen. But then I was on the sofa one afternoon and it came on and to be honest, I couldn't be bothered reaching for the remote. It was the episode with Leonard's mum in it for the first time and it properly had me in stitches.
I think if it wasn't for Jim Parsons though, it'd be nowhere near as good. Sheldon Cooper is a legend and the dynamic between him and Penny is excellent.
It's been a very good time for American comedy lately.
Big Bang, Modern Family, 30 Rock, How I met your Mother, The Office, The Middle all cracking shows.
Community is light years ahead of them all though.

I think the general quality of American shows is much higher than the UK. If you look outside the sitcoms as well you've got things like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Dexter, Mad Men etc all of which are superbly written, acted and produced.

Yeah American TV is probably at it's peak right now.
Was reading an interview recently with Gabriel Byrne about why so many bg names are turning to T.V. - Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, Byrne himself etc and he was saying that it's because the scope for story telling is much greater. You can encompass more of a story arc in 12 or 13 1 hour episodes than in any 2hr film. For genuine "character" actors it's a great opportunity.
He basically credited HBO and FX for helping push US T.V. to where it is now. Shows like Oz, Deadwood, The Sopranos, The Shield etc doing grown up drama years ago and proving it can be commercially succesful.
