Arsene is quoted today saying "Gervinho could be a bargain".
Fair enough..after all, anyone likes a bargain...defined as paying less than what the true value is. Who doesn't like those? But they can be hard to find and take a lot of time.
Another definition of bargain could also be..pay the full value, and receive the full benefit and return. So, a bargain player for us could be a top central defender we pay the full market rate for right now, and then that player earns every pound by being an outstanding center back for us for years. To me, that is also a bargain. After all, we want Barca to pay the market value for Fab...why do we shy away from paying the market rates for those players we need right now??
I would feel better if Arsene were more proud about this 2nd type of bargain...and get a cd, etc in here now that can pre-season train and improve us considerably. Now..that would be a "bargain".!!

Has Wenger ever paid more than £20m for a player?

I couldn't agree with your comments more. Sol was an example of the 2nd kind of bargain. Although we got him on a free his wages were - by Arsenal's standards - huge, but he repaid every penny with his performances over the years.
