Essentially its all to do with the fps conversion rates.. ultra HD performs a lot quicker and at a higher volume so the picture is incredibly defined.
Unfortunately, i've not seen one for less than £15k yet.. most seem to be around the £20k mark...

How much better can it really be for that much of a mark-up in price?

Nah, it is purely based on resolution... 3840x2160 (or 4x HD)
You can have ultra HD in various frame rates though and 3D.
A company called RED just launched a budget Ultra HD player that streams UHD content. $1500..... Just need the tv!

i've seen 4K/UHD tvs at a film/video tradeshow in Vegas.
It's pretty amazing at 84"... You can stand right close and see no pixels... a bit like iphone retina. It has a certain 3D quality too.....
But overall.... On a 40" screen, it makes little difference. I think it will be a niche market, much like 3D.... It will happen though, but the transition will be nothing as quick as HD.... Decades before you'll see alot of UHD content. The broadcast pipeline still stuggles with proper HD and the cost to broadcasters to change again, so quick after HD... well,, it just wont happen quickly.
Never thought i'd geek out on here.... this is one of my key markets though.

the Olympics were broadcast at 7,680x4,320 (60fps) in selected places around the UK and Japan. I chatted to a few guys that saw it, said it was stunning on a small cinema sized screen. Very much like looking through a window onto real life.

I heard 4 channels in Japan are going UHD in March??

from what i hear... Japan are pretty much skipping 4K UHD (3840x2160).
NHK, their national broadcaster, are gunning straight for 8K UHD (7,680x4,320)
