Liverpool were frustratingly beaten by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Boxing Day.

They couldn't have made a much better start, with Luis Suarez belatedly winning the Reds their first penalty of the season. He raced into the penalty area before being brought down by Ryan Shawcross. Steven Gerrard stepped up to slot the ball into the bottom left corner from the spot.

But just three minutes later, Stoke were level. A typical Stoke long ball was not dealt with by either Daniel Agger or Martin Skrtel, who slipped. This allowed Jon Walters to receive the ball and slot it in.

Seven minutes later, Stoke took the lead when Kenwyne Jones headed in from a Glenn Whelan corner kick at the near post.

Liverpool then started to play some good football and had a number of chances to get themselves level, with Suarez and Gerrard both missing chances. But they could not get one back before the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Liverpool were made to pay for this as Walters scored again following a long throw-in by Andy Wilkinson.

Liverpool tried to find a way back into the game but Stoke were organised in defence and would not let them get through.

The result leaves Liverpool in tenth place, eight points off fourth-placed Tottenham.
