do you actually like running or only doing it to get fit?, might sound odd, but what i mean is if you need the motivation of someone else to get you going or joining you, could be asking for trouble.
if you are easily motivated then, run round the block one time and each time you do it add a little to the distance and before you know it you are running miles not yards.
do it in stages though, like the saying goes don't run before you can walk, so you need to get your body used to the physical workout first.

I actually have a friend at work who's reached 40 and decided to start running. His aim is to run a Marathon in 2013/2014. However, he's definitely on the heavy side! I gave him this as a site of where to start - May help you.

Jenners- I wasnt a stranger to excercise, even running. In fact enjoyed it first thing in the morning in the local park
Have been injured (lower back) put on a bit of blubber, so just need to get back into it
Problem is knowing hwat I could do and the frustration of not being to do anywhere close to it. Wanted more info with regards to building up etc

Hi, I had similar thoughts about getting fit last year.
Dodgy knees ruled out running (I'm fifty something),
so I got a road bike.
Best thing I ever did, I'm now hooked, having never cycled much before, 30 mile rides now easy, 40 plus not too bad.
Great hobby.

I run regularly, cycle to work daily, and always thought i was quite fit, played five-a-side for the first time in about 8 yrs the other week (used to play weekly for years) and realised i'm not as fit as i thought.

What are your injuries? I would highly recommend you stay away from running on the road. The impact of the hard surface can play havoc with your joints. If I was you I'd start on a bike or cross trainer then run on a field or football pitch if you must

swimming is a good one also.
esp as you get breathless quite easily, help build up your lungs/breathing etc and doesn't put pressure on your joints and help build up muscle etc.
happy new year to you all anyway.

Get good shoes specially if you are overweight. Build up slow. A target is a good idea too, for example the Manchester 10k in May is great fun.
Good luck.
