Wigan face Bournemouth

Wigan have a weekend away from the rigours of the Premier League.

The first team was looking jaded after the four Christmas matches and Maritnez is sure to rest several players. So it's an opportunity for some squad members to come in.

Ryo Miyaichi and Antolin Alcaraz may be fit to return after injury. And fans may get a first glimpse of new signings Angelo Henriquez and Roger Espinoza. Stam, Fyvie, Gomez, McManaman and Boselli can all look forward to a game. I'd expect some regulars to give a firm foundation to the team - perhaps Jones and Ramis.

Wigan lost - on penalties - to Bradford City earlier this season, and will be aware of the threat that comes with Bournemouth.

Wigan started with three regular first team players, and with Golobart making his debut. Bournemouth were more eager and looked more dangerous. They duly scored the first goal.

Martinez brought on Henriquez at half time and Wigan lifted the tempo. Wigan hit the bar twice before winning a penalty, converted on the rebound by Gomez.

Bournemouth felt unlucky. They were denied a penalty in the first half, but television didn't show either incident in detail. All the same, the Bournemouth fans were happier with the result.

Not sure why you speak in third person though - makes me confused on whether you're a Wigan fan or not

You know Wigan are going to face one hell of a task to win at Dean Court, right?

In the second half, Bournemouth attack the Steve Fletcher stand and we always always score. Been to AFCB 4 times this season and seen 3 3-0 wins and 1 4-1 win.

I think Bournemouth have a great chance.

Wigan face a trip to Fulham on Saturday, travel to Bournemouth on Tuesday and then have a home game against Sunderland on Saturday. They are going to concentrate on the league games. Wigan's best opportunity to win the tie was at home, and I am not optimistic about the replay.

However, there are one or two encouraging signs. They have signed two new players, Henriquez and Espinoza, who both need games. And - who knows? - by this time next week, they may have signed another! Also, Dicko has been recalled from Blackpool.

There are also players returning from injury - Alcarez and Miyaichi should both be fit to play. Miyaichi, on loan from Arsenal, is an old-fashioned winger who just loves taking his man on. He would certainly make the replay more exciting. And one day - surely - Boselli must come to life and score.

On the negative side, Kone is away for the African Nations Cup, while there are rumours of a bid for McCarthy. Watson and Lopez are both out with longer-term injuries.

The squad players have been a disappointment on the whole. They have not really taken their chance to impress either Martinez or the fans. Jones has shown he can take a place in midfield but Stam and Gomez, despite impressive moments, remain on the fringe of the first team. I don't know whether McManaman will be able to make the step up to the Premier League.

A place at Macclesfield awaits the winner.

Macclesfield is a derby

Bournemouth could well reach the 5th round of the cup - that would be a great achievement.

Watching Wigan can be agonising at times! Their Premier League existence is so marginal that every throw-in and free kick, every goal and every injury seems critical.

To suffer an offside goal against them - or to be denied a justified penalty for them - is heart-breaking. Gomez received a red card at Sunderland when Wigan were on top. The defence became more exposed, thus Caldwell was booked and missed the next game. Wigan lost 1-0 to Sunderland. Although the red card was rescinded, the result still stands.

And then they have had a bad run of injuries. They recently had three centre halves out at the same time.

It's a long season, so it's probably better to try to be philosophical about the game!

Tuesday will see nine replays, but none of them will be televised.

As Bournemouth fans know, it's a long journey. I don't think many Wigan fans will be able to make the trip for an evening match.

With a home match against Sunderland on Saturday, Martinez cannot afford to risk his first team on a trip to Bournemouth - with the possibility of extra time and penalties too.

Further, Ramis is now out with injury. In the circumstances, Alcaraz could make an early return. I would expect one or two senior players to appear - say Stam, Jones or Gomez. Espinoza and Henriquez may make their first starts, with the rest of the team made up of youngsters.

I expect another competitive game, but it's certainly an opportunity for Bournemouth if they can only take advantage of it.
