It seems whenever a player has a good season with us and starts to attract the eye of the top 2 or 3 clubs, they end up 'asking to leave' or not commiting to a new contract.
Barry, Milner, Young, Downing all in recent memory.
Then you look at other teams with a similar stature, who can get players to commit to a club and don't assume the grass is always greener.
Arteta and Cahill of Everton, Bale and VDV of Spurs, Parker (signed a new contract with West Ham in January), even Villa targets such as Robert Huth and Brede Hangelaand have stated they are happy where they are and don't intend to move.
I gurarantee if they were at Villa they would be seeking a move.
It just annoys me - look at Milner and Barry now. Bit part players at a multi-million pound machine that has managed to win as much as Porstmouth have done in the last few years.
Just for once, I'd like us to have a player that is courted by others, but commits to us.
Why are no players EVER happy at Villa?

I agree it's frustrating! Have you noticed all are English ! It's catch 22 as they will only stay if we are successful but how do we do that if our best players leave each season.
Looking forward to see who we bring in though. It's going to be interesting!

being english with the likely new rules means they will always get over the odds offers from the rich clubs. it's all about the money.
none of the players you mention came through our youth system so they have no real affiliation to villa.
you can start worrying if players move to smaller/worse clubs without a payrise!
i say put trust (and even more investment) in the yoof and try to build like utd did in the 90s...
