I was once a huge fighting game addict. Over the past few years I've calmed myself and stuck to other genres of less violence. Like shooters and football. Recently however I've gotten back into fighters again.
I've always been a Virtua Fighter kinda guy and I still am. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is a great game. Subtle improvements over 5 and much better than 4 Evolution. I'm also playing Soul Calibur V which I think is fun but its seemed to have lost the magic that the first 2 had. I have not played 4 so was wonder what people thought of that one.
What are you favourite fighting games past or present?
I was deep into Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 but couldn't be bothered after.
I was never a fan of Tekken. Super combos are not my thing.
Dead or Alive series is ok. Something about it never fully grabbed me.
Have a good day.

Tekken 2 was great. Those ridiculously high jumps you could do, not to mention the satisfaction of unlocking kazuya as a playable character

Street Fighter 2 was the first fighter i ever played and still ranks as one of the best. Back then there was a strategy to fighting games, now it is all about button mashing

Nonsense. Virtua Fighter is much more strategic than Street Fighter ever has been.

Tekken is the grandad of all button mashers. Yu could literally win a round with one combo.

It takes a certain degree of practice to master a combo though. I remember in virtua fighter you could just tap l1 to do a throw move.

Street Fighter 2 is probably the best fighter for me. I dont play games anymore so don't really know what is out there these days.

There is a very limited number of moves in Street Fighter 2. The strategy is more down to reaction time more than anything else. If you look around the world there are serious tournaments involving Virtua Fighter as it is seen as one the most well balanced and deep fighting games ever. Not to mention most will play with an arcade pad. So L1 to throw isnt a problem.

It may take some practice to master those combos in Tekken obviously but all a fight turns into is a player trying to out combo the other fighter instead of looking to get other advantages such as positioning, baiting, countering, and knowing the full array of moves for all situations. I just find Virtua Fighter more of a simulation even with all of its over exaggerated jumps and such.

I'm still hooked on Double Dragon I & II. No kidding. Love these old games. Street Fighter II plus edition was also a glorious one. Hat Trick (aye, a footie game) was supreme as well as violent: the fat ref was totally stupid and fell down so you could hit your opponents. Top-notch game as well.
