The demise of Blockbuster

After Jessops and HMV, it looks like blockbuster is set to enter administration. Very sad times indeed.

I have had a DVD from our local video rental place for about 4 years and no one has ever looked for it back

I worked for HMV 13 years ago. Even then it was clearly just a matter of time, even the managers had already started buying all their CD's from on-line companies as it was cheaper. Very sad.......

Quelle surprise! - not!

The only surprise is this has not happened sooner. I don't even buy DVDs these days let alone rent.

I think more than anything netflicks has seen off blockbuster, cheaper and more convenient. Same with HMV, you can download the entire beatles back catalogue for free via youtube if you wish, why would you go to HMV and buy all their albums?

One thing i have noticed about the old high street is the amount of "vintage" shops that have opened up, there's a real do-it-yourself vibe about parts of Nottingham (where i live) now, i for one don't mind a return to independent businesses and the end of chain shops and franchises, a we now know they barely pay any tax anyway so it's not like we're all going to suffer horribly if they're not around.

Exactly RedCog- Who buys discs nowadays? Either blueray/dvd/cds? Does anyone still buy them when they're so widely available in so many formats online.

why would people spend 3 quid on a dvd to rent at blockbuster when you can join something like lovefilm for a tenner, get unlimted dvds for the month, get them delivered to your door, and have no late fees.

Whoever said that supermarkets will own everything including properties funeral services is right. Track have their own banking system in place I heard a couple yrs back. Slowly Asda Tesco and maybe Sainsbuy's will probably be the medium for all things to buy.
