I know Bollywood grates - i recall going to see a Bollywood film in the cinema once and regretted it. No wonder they have intervals.
However, a special mention to 'My Name is Khan'. I thought the movie along Shah Rukh Khan was brilliant.

Yes. I did love that movie but maybe because it seems different from other Bollywood movies i've seen.
Was a bit more 'americanised' (if that's a good thing)

Having watched a few Bollywood films I know how irritating they can be. Especially with all the songs.
For me though the Korean films are the best ones, Japanese ones are hit and miss.

I suppose it was indeed - a big chunk of it was shot in the states and it was sans the irritating song and dance numbers that seems to afflict archetypical Bollywood flicks.

When talking about movies one should class American movies in 2 categories.
Mainstream and Independent ones.
The american indie film industry makes some amazing movies. Just as good as anything in Europe or Asia.

I don't agree. I know your idee fixe, Zoey Deschanel, is a regular indie actress but i doubt it.
Europe is streets ahead and then Asia. Talented actresses like Isabelle Huppert are as good Meryl Streep but they only get to ply their trade in art-house, Indie films.
American Indie? Good but not great

Clerks i'd give you.
Donnie Darko and Juno were not remotely indie despite their subject matter and cinematography.
Besides for every Clerks, there are a hundred La pianistes and Mesrines.
