Wigan home to Sunderland

After mixed fortunes in the cup, Wigan and Sunderland return to the bitter struggle of the Premier League.

Wigan look in good shape - apart from the absence of Kone and the loss of Ramis, that is.

Sunderland have had a modest revival, but that may have ended with the mid-week defeat. Cattermole seems likely to miss the game.

It will be a tense afternoon, but Wigan should get something out of the game.

A disappointing and damaging day for Wigan.

Sunderland, with the benefit of a goal scorer in form, won the first half. Wigan came back strongly in the second but could not manage an equaliser.

Wigan dominated the second half, and created chances too. But they couldn't score. Martinez switched to Plan B after 70 minutes, bringing on Henriquez, and then Boselli, and playing just two at the back.

They pulled one goal back, but a second proved beyond them. Henriquez made a good impression, and perhaps deserved more than 20 minutes.

Wigan were by no means disgraced - they could well have taken a point from the game. Top marks go to Maloney and, for his role in the back two, Caldwell.

On Tuesday, it's Stoke and next Saturday Southampton. We'll see how Southampton perform this afternoon under their new manager.
