Wenger & Walcott on Theo's new deal

Manager Arsène Wenger said: “We are all delighted that Theo has signed a new contract. He joined us as a 16-year-old and since then has developed very well to become an extremely important player for both Arsenal Football Club and England."

On why the contract negotiations were so drawn out:
Manager Arsène Wenger said: "There was a stumbling block. As we all know; Theo is very fast but he's not very good at football, in particular kicking or touching the football. Theo was willing to sign a new deal for just 15k p/w but only on the condition he was to take all penalties, freekicks and corners. I am happy to confirm, we have finally settled on a 100k per week deal and - most importantly for the club - an agreement that Theo will stop trying to take every penalty, freekick and corner and just run very fast"

Theo said: "I am very happy to have signed a new contract here at Arsenal. Thanks to everyone for their continued support, especially the manager, everyone at the club and most importantly the fans. I have made it clear from the start that I wanted to stay at Arsenal so I am pleased we have agreed a deal that everyone is happy with. What’s important now is for the team to realise its potential and win trophies."
