Welcome to gameweek 16 of the LSTD’s Barclays Premiership. Well... what a weekend we have this week... We have a potential EARLY title decider between Arsenal and Chelsea at the Emirates. How will Rooney go about his DM problems? Portsmouth vs Liverpool provides a mouthwatering match in the battle for Europe, and Newcastle vs Manchester City will no doubt be entertaining... Can the toons put another dent in City’s title challenge? While you’re waiting, have a look at the league table: http://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/147408 - Oh wait, it’s still living in the past
TEAM NEWS FROM FRATTON PARK
Early team news from Fratton Park! Portsmouth have fielded their strongest available XI unsurprisingly. Suprisingly they have no back up keeper on a very youthful bench.
Yaya Toure’s name stands out on the Liverpool team sheet; no doubt he will have a big impact on this!
Portsmouth Zieler; Howedes, Bonnuci, Luiz, Cissokho; Gustavo, Witsel; Gotze, Kroos, James; Lewandowski
Liverpool: Courtois, Azpilicueta, N’koulou, Cahill, Marcelo; Marrone, Yaya Toure, Ramires; Lamela, Soldado, Mata
TEAM NEWS FROM THE EMIRATES
Arsenal have gone for a 3-1-4-1-1 formation, what is a huge surprise. Fan wouldn’t have been expecting this. Wayne Rooney is forced to play in CM due to the injuries to Daniele De Rossi and Sergio Busquets.
Chelsea couldn’t have hoped for any better luck with their injuries this week. Only Khedira misses out, but they have the squad to cope with that. They’ll really be looking to win this! Hulk gets a debut appearance.
Arsenal Reina; Vidic, Barzagli, Cole; Coentrao; Alves, Moutinho, Rooney, Silva; Ronaldo;Van Persie
Chelsea: Neuer; Lahm, Kompany, Subotic, Baines; Bender, Vidal; Hulk, Fabregas, Neymar; Aguero
TEAM NEWS FROM THE SPORT DIRECT ARENA
Newcastle lost last week against Birmingham, which has resulted in manager Robin dropping Alex Song. John Terry starts, which will no doubt help Newcastle’s leaky defence.
Newcastle Szczesny; Zabaleta, Terry, Godin, Johnson; Mikel, Oscar, Milner, Walcott, Hazard, Higuain
Man City Casillas; Arbeloa, Ramos, Pique, Vertonghen; Hernanes, Cambiasso; Valencia, Suarez, Di Maria; Benzema
TEAM NEWS FROM LOFTUS ROAD
This might be a close game as QPR have a really good team. Birmingham however are in top form and will be looking to build on their superb win against Newcastle last week.
QPRLopez; Schwaab, Botia, Alex, Antonini; Essien, Motolivo, Dembele; Lennon, Nasri, Torres.
Birmingham Cech, Sagna, Hummles, Agger, Clichy, Tiote, Denisov, Modric, Robben, Ribery, Gomez.
TEAM NEWS FROM THE STADIUM OF LIGHT
New manager Punting takes charge of his team on the touchlines for the first time today after sitting in the stands last week. His mere presence help them to three points some would say, let’s see how his team will cope this week against an inform and a very impressive Aston Villa side.
Sunderland Friedal, Carvajal, Kirchoff, Rolando, Bochetti; Carrick, Nainggolan; Adrian, Diego, Chadli; Kiessling
Aston Villa Stek, Piszczek, Dante, Mexes, Gibbs; Wilshere, Arteta, Fellaini; Kuba, Giroud Mandzukic
------------------------------------------------------------------------
All games are underway!
00:00 GOAL! Newcastle’s defence just cannot stop conceding goals! Genuine quality from Luis Suarez as City take the lead. The striker surges forward before picking out the run of Karim Benzema with a lovely reverse pass. Defender Glen Johnson is turned far too easily though as the striker rolls his shot past Wojciech Szczesny.
01:00 Newcastle look a bit rattled by that goal - and I agree with Mr Wilshere, Wojciech Szczesny was beaten far too easily. He was caught off balance.
03:00 Nice link up from Portsmouth as Aly Cissokho and James play an intricate one-two, but Courtois is off his line quickly to make a flying save at his near post.
05:00 Wigan force the first corner and Leandro Damiao rises at the back post to head wide of goal. Positive start from the away side.
07:00 GOAL! Arsenal have started really well, adjusting to this formation brilliantly, as Chelsea attempt to get to grips with it. They lead through the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo spins Nevan Subotic on the halfway line before finding David Silva, who plays it out wide to Ashley Cole, who supposedly should be playing as the third centre back. The veteran looks up and picks out Ronaldo sprinting into the area, and he controls a wonderful volley into the top corner. Really fine goal from world class player!
09:00 GOAL! It's been coming, and Portsmouth lead. Mario Gotze plays a one-two with Robert Lewandowski before cutting inside on to his left foot and beating Thibaut Courtois with a low shot at his near post.
11:00 Tottenhams's Pablo Hernandez uses his pace to beat Lucas to the ball and the winger gets in a cross which Oscar Cardozo volleys horribly over from 15 yards.
13:00 Sunderland's Stefan Kiessling is denied by Aston Villa goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who palms his curling effort away from goal after the striker had linked up well with team-mate Michael Carrick just inside the penalty area.
15:00 Reading are containing Hull City at the Madjeski, and they almost sneak into the lead when Adel Taarabt takes control 30 yards from goal and fires a shot just wide of the top corner.
17:00 GOAL! Reading have kicked on! This could be a big goal at the foot of the table. Christian Fuchs makes ground down the left before sliding a pass into the stride of Luciano Narsingh, the winger taking his time before firing in low from 15 yards.
19:00 It's a slow start at Loftus Road, with Birmingham goalkeeper Petr Cech cutting out one early cross into the area. That's been about it.
21:00 Back to the emirates, Chelsea nearly grabbed an equaliser. Vincent Kompany's header is met by Nevan Subotic, but his header from eight yards out hits the post with goalkeeper Pepe Reina well beaten and it remains 1-0 to the gooners.
23:00 Liverpool are screaming for a penalty at Fratton Park as Yaya Toure’s flicked header from Mata’s cross strikes Leonardo Bonnuci’s raised arm in the box. It certainly wasn't intentional and the referee waves play on much to the away side's frustration.
25:00 GOAL! Massive goal from the Chelsea’s new man Hulk. It's his first for the club, as the Brazilian loses his man at the near post to head into the top corner. What a response by Fan and his team. (Assist by Cesc Fabregas)
27:00 Liverpool are having a spell of pressure here. First Erik Lamela smashes in a 25-yarder which Zieler beats clear before the corner causes some havoc and it is cleared in the end. Good response from the men from Mersyside.
29:00 GOAL! The pressure has been building and the Sunderland defence cannot hold out. A cross from the right runs all the way through to Mario Mandzukic on the left side of the Black Cats’ box. He drives a low shot that is going just wide until Olivier Giroud sticks out a boot and diverts the ball high into the net.
32:00 GOAL! Robin van Persie puts Arsenal back in front. The Dutch striker gives Manuel Neuer no chance with a left-foot finish from eight-yards after good work by David Silva.
35:00 GOAL! Manchester United take the lead and it is down to a combination off grit and skill. Ashley Young loses the ball but wins it back 25 yards from goal with a strong challenge before finding Edin Dzeko in the box and he makes no mistake with a cool finish at the near post.
37:00 Birmingham have a good attack on the right hand side, its Arjen Robben who beats Antonini quiet easily. He then has the composure to square the ball back to the edge of the area, where Mario Gomez miss kicks the ball. He certainly didn’t have the composure there.
40:00 GOAL! Two goals in five minutes and United are cruising. It is a belter of a goal as well as Lucas finds Carlos Tevez in the box on the left and he opens his body before slotting a shot into the far corner. Lovely stuff.
42:00 GOAL! Liverpool are level! Mata finds the ball on the left-hand side of the box thanks to a lovely little ball by Ramires. He rolls it to the edge of the area, where Yaya Toure waits, striking across the ball, which is always moving away from Zieler and nestles into the back of the net. It's a magnificent finish.
44:00 GOAL! Wolves strike first. Javier Pastore’s free-kick is floated over the top of the Wigan defence and to the back post, where Fernando Llorente is well-placed to head into the top corner. It is a good finish, but Wigan need to look at themselves for allowing the striker so much space.
45:00 Back at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal have just conceded a corner which Chelsea are about to take.
45:00 GOAL! Arsenal fail to clear the corner from the left and after a bit of pinball the ball falls to Vincent Kompany at the back post and he makes no mistake with a finish into the far corner. (assist by Cesc Fabregas)
**--Half Time--**
All games are back underway!
46:00 GOAL! What a finish this is! Immediate breakthrough for Birmingham after the break. It’s Mario Gomez who collects a neat through-ball from Luka Modric and hammers the ball into the roof of the net from 10 yards. Unstoppable.
47:00 A quick break from Aston Villa almost opens Sunderland up. Kieran Gibbs gets in on the overlap and crosses well, but Mario Mandzukic can't get on the end of it.
49:00 GOAL! Portsmouth score an early goal at the start of the half again! It’s Robert Lewandowski! Toni Kroos plays him in on goal with a beautiful pass with the outside of his foot and Lewandowksi is cool as ice - passing the ball past Thibaut Courtois.
51:00 QPR go close. Samir Nasri sends in a lovely cross and Fernando Torres can't quite reach it. Any connection would have made it 1-1.
54:00 GOAL! Newcastle are level. Gonzalo Higuain is fouled by Jan Vertonghen 25 yards from goal and Eden Hazard curls the free-kick round the wall and finds the net. Brilliant.
56:00 Manchester United have settled into their stride at Old Trafford but they almost get hit as Oscar Cardozo nearly puts Spurs back into the game with a low, curling 25-yard effort that goes just wide.
58:00 At Loftus Road, it's been a quiet restart between QPR and Birmingham. Daniel Agger headed over for the visitors but there's been little else to report.
60:00 GOAL! Arsenal back in front on the hour mark! Robin Van Persie heads down a cross and fellow forward Cristiano Ronaldo is on hand to stab the ball past Chelsea keeper Manuel Neuer from six yards.
Subs – Triple change at Old Trafford as Tottenham want to get back into the game:Wickham, Lacazette, Meireles all on for Alves, Cardozo, Huddlestone. Looks like Portsmouth want to change to a 4-4-2, despite being in a winning formation as Bony and Asamoah are on for Gustavo and Witsel. A bit of a silence at Fratton Park while the subs were taking place, hoping N21 knows what he is doing. Clasie replaces Wanyama for Wigan.
62:00 Stunning save by Buffon, with a terrific one-handed stop to deny Antoine Griezmann from it being 2-1 after the winger had beaten the United off-side trap at Old Trafford.
65:00 GOAL! Hull are level at the Madjeski. Silvestre Varela forces a flying save from Rui Patricio with a curling 30-yard free-kick. Adil Rami heads Kaka’s corner towards goal and Klaas Jan Huntelaar flicks the ball into the net with his head.
More subs – Portsmouth have indeed gone to a 4-4-2 and LSTD makes his first change and brings on Javier Hernandez for Cesar Azpilicueta. Let’s see if this one brings any more chances. Parker and Pienaar are on for QPR.
67:00 Liverpool are battling for a way back into the game against Portsmouth. Javier Hernandez wins a corner. Juan Mata takes it with Nicolas N’koulou meeting it and heads back across goal but Asamoah is on the line to head away.
69:00 GOAL! Sunderland come up with the goods to level against Aston Villa. Michael Carrick is the architect as he drives down the right before pulling the ball back for Stefan Kiessling to lash in at the near post. Lovely stuff from the black cats.
70:00 GOAL! It's not a moment to remember for the Arsenal goalkeeper. Neymar is played into the box by Cesc Fabregas and drives the ball across the box. I'm not sure it is actually on target though until the goalkeeper helps it in. Who is going to win this?
Subs - De Jong and Lambert are on Martin and Szalai for Reading. Moses for Hulk (Chelsea). Mavuba for Strootman (Wolves). Ivanovic For Modric (Birmingham). Papadopoulos for Kroos (Portsmouth). Beñat for Ramires (Liverpool) Cazorla for Silva (Arsenal) Nani for Valencia (City) Konoplyanka on for Chadli (Sunderland)
72:00 GOAL! Liverpool are level! A cross from the right swings across the box to the far post where Javier Hernandez fluffs his shot but Juan Mata is on hand to fire in.
74:00 GOAL! A shot from Fernandinho is deflected into the path of Leandro Damiao, who shoots home from eight yards to bring N21’s team level.
Subs – At Newcastle Oscar and Eden Hazard leave the field for Ryan Giggs and Alex Song. Gerrard for Dzeko (Man United). Lukaku and Shaqiri for Llorente and Gaitan (Wolves). De Bruyne for Lamela (Liverpool) Podolski for Alves (Arsenal) Ballotelli for Di Maria (Manchester City)
77:00 GOAL! Despite taking their two most attacking players off, Newcastle are ahead! Poor, poor play by Manchester City. Hernanes loses the ball to Gonzalo Higuain who dribbles past Sergio Ramos and scores with a powerful shot. Replays show Cassillas should have saved it. Robin looked as though he had settled for draw, but now he could get full three points! (Assist by Theo Walcott)
78:00 GOAL! QPR are level!, it’s Aaron Lennon who dribbles with the ball, and smashes it into the top corner. No chance for the keeper there. (assist by Torres)
79:00 GOAL! Late in the game and finally Aston Villa find a cutting edge to match their industry. It is forged by some neat footwork from Jack Wilshere to turn in the box before playing the ball back to Kuba and he does all the rest with a superb finish from the edge of the area.
Subs – Nolito for Taarabt (Reading) Walcott for Valbuena (Newcastle) Campana and Eto’o for Tevez and Sandro (Man United)
80:00 Big Chance for Liverpool to take the lead. A cross from the left is beautifully chested down at the back stick by substitute Roberto Soldado, but the striker thrashes his shot wildly wide from no more than five yards out. Very unlike him.
81:00 GOAL! Chelsea put their superior possession to good use as Neymar stands up an inviting cross to the back post and Hulk gets up really well to send a header back across Reina in goal and find the far corner. Chelsea take the lead for the first time and Fan doesn’t even blink.
82:00 It is not looking good for Tottenham against Manchester United. They trail 2-0 and are struggling to create anything. Meanwhile Hull are knocking on the door against Reading for a winner.
83:00 Wolves lead! Mauricio Isla is neat and tidy on the ball before playing it out to his left and, when Juanfran cross comes in, Romelu Lukaku finds space to meet it and beat Rene Adler with a cool finish.
84:00 Both teams could win this at Fratton Park. Liverpool have a great chance, but then Portsmouth counter, which Mario Gotze didn’t make the most of. Signs of tiredness...
Subs – Chelsea bring on Benteke and Schurrle for Aguero and Neymar.
85:00 GOAL! Sunderland continued to pour forward, with Adrian denied by a fine Dante block. The equaliser comes from the resulting corner, however, which is taken short for Ramirez to pick out Jorje Rolando, who rises at the near post to direct his header into the opposite corner, via the inside of the woodwork....
86:00 GOAL! What a strike this is, from Kaka. He finds space to get on the end of Claudio Marchisio’s corner, steering a perfectly-hit volley into the net. A cracker of a goal!
87:00 Very less time remaining around the grounds. Chelsea have the opportunity to kill the game off, but Andre Schurrle miscues his shot.
Ezequiel Lavezzi - - Hull City
What is Lavezzi thinking here? He wins a free-kick when Blaise Matuidi slides in late on him near the by-line, but then lashes out senselessly at the central midfielder. He’s shown a straight red. Can Hull hold on?
88:00 GOAL! You knew Birmingham were on top, and now they are ahead too. It's a lovely goal too, with Frank Ribery skipping past a couple of challenges before teeing up Mario Gomez to bury his shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.
89:00 GOAL! Well he’s had an impact and now he’s got the equiliser. Mario Ballotelli has helps make the goal too, playing a swift one-two with Luis Suarez on the edge of the area before despatching the return pass past Wojciech Szczesny and into the top corner. Newcastle can’t stop conceding. John Terry is livid.
90:00 GOAL! Chelsea have breathing space after Christian Benteke puts the finishing touches to a fine passing move. Arsenal inadvertently start the attack through a poor Pepe Reina clearance and the Blues pour down the left, with Andre Schurrle’s cross being slipped into Benteke's path near the edge of the area by Mkhitaryan. Massive win for Fan! Massive twist in the title race!
90:00 GOAL! Portsmouth have a winner!! N21 is jumping on the touchline in joy. Robert Lewandowski strikes again. The league’s top scorer timed his run to perfection to meet James’ cross at the near post and beats Thibaut Courtois with a glancing header.
Full time everywhere.
