Santiago Munez (aka Santi) was an almost overnight sensation for Newcastle in the 2003/04 season. His goal against Liverpool at the end of the season got Newcastle into the Champions League. Then in the following season he was headhunted by Real Madrid in January in a dramatic deadline day swap deal with Michael Owen going in the opposite direction.
Santi went onto help Real Madrid win the Champions League with Beckham scoring the winner against Arsenal.
The world was Santi's Oyster. Injury prevented him from his dream to play for Mexico in the 2006 World Cup. Tragedy also ensued with him losing his best friend Charlie Braithwaite during the world cup.
He got himself a transfer to Spurs, where due to management changes he got himself frozen out. Old 'Arry forgot him and let him rot in the reserves. Old 'Arry couldn't tell if he was for real or not. Santi's ultimate humiliation came when he was not registered for the PL squad. He stuck doggedly to training until he became a free agent last year.
He had fallen out with his agent Glen Foy when he hit the big time. Foy didn't want to touch him with a bargepole when Santi was on his way out.
As Santi only knew too well that he was "only one tackle away from flipping burgers". He ended up working in Macdonalds in Hackney, NE London. He kept up his skill levels by playing for Harlow Harriers. Pardew's scouting network have traced Santi playing on Hackney Marshes using pizza boxes as shin pads. Pardew is evaluating giving Santi a lifeline as we speak.
Santi had fathered a child with his then girlfriend Roz Harmison a nurse. She left him after she couldn't cope with his flambuoyant lifestyle when Santi became a Real Madrid player.
Expect a return of the Prodigal Son who admitted he has unfinished business at SJP.
